For three years, Sniffles has been by my side. Through all the times no one listened, and no one felt me, Sniffles was always there. A week ago she looked quite sick, so we’ve been taking good care of her, and we finally got a vet appointment. She haden’t been eating, and she had been cuddled up in the corner FOREVER, not moving a muscle. This afternoon, we got to the vet just as hurricane Michele hit land, (we live in Gerorgia, so we’re fine,) we arrived at the vet. Walking out in the rain we carried Sniffles inside and waited to be called back. A few minutes later, after Sniffles being stressful checked out, my mom called me back into the back room. I glanced at her nervously, wondering what it was, and she said, “Sniffles is, d-dying...” I stood there, speechless. After all these years she would just fail on me? I curled up into mom’s warm, comforting arms and mourned for my best friend. “They have her in a little mask, so she can breathe better. Would you like to come see her?” She ask slowly. I nodded, afraid for my companion. I walked in and there she was, laying on a small table, waiting for the Lord’s love to take her away. I slowly stroked her smooth coat as a tear rolled down my cheek. “I will always, always love you...” I whispered. I carefully picked her up and cradled her in my arms, as she turned to look at me. We just stayed like that for a while, her comfortably cradled in my arms, me silently crying, us two, together. I never wanted that moment to end.
But nothing lasts forever.
Eventually, I set her back down and walked into the check in room again. Having my three younger siblings sitting there, not saying a word, for they could easily guess what happened. They put my baby to sleep, and slipped her into a warm box for us to take home. After picking up Zaxby’s for dinner, we headed home, tears, box, Sniffles and all.
I already can’t seem to think about her without breaking down, and I know I’ll always have a Sniffles-shaped hole in my heart that nothing can fill, and I know I’ll never, ever be the same.

I will love you until the very end, my precious child.
Your loving mother,
