Thank you everyone who has posted or PM'd with your kind wishes.

Willow went back to the vet today to get his prednisone. It is leukaemia that he has (and that the rest of them have had) and not lymphoma (lumps and bumps). Think like feline leaukaemia. It is probably caused by a virus - but there is no info as to what that virus can be in pet guinea pigs.

He didnt; see his normal vet today and the one I saw questioned if I still wanted him to have treatment in view of the fact he only had a short time left. He is still very happy, active, eating, glossy coat...so in my mind there is no justifiable reason to PTS at this time...and the pred could give him a few months more happy life with his brother Maple (which equates to years in piggie terms)

If there is no weight gain (or more weight loss) by friday on the pred, he will be PTS before it gets any worse. We have discussed the possibility of other treatments including antivirals and asparaginase....and unfortunately because we don;t know the cause, cant identify the virus....there is nothing more that can safely be done.

I'm comfortable with where we are...and I know Willow is pretty chipper too!
(But I feel a massive photo shoot coming on tomorrow!)

Oh my blueberries, I'm so sorry (I just red you message about what the vet said). Poor Willow, I'm sure he knows you love him and would do anything for him! He's had a great life, and hopefully he's still got quite a long life ahead of him.
Just keep on going, Willow. Be a brave boy for your mummy hunny x>> x>> :0 xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Whee all send some little loves and caring wheeeeeeeks for dear Willow xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxo
HUGE HUGS for you xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Thanks everyone. Willow started his pred this morning (had to wait 24 hours for the last dose of metacam to leave his system before starting the steroids as the two don;t mix!). He weighed in this morning at 1.111kg so hasn;t lost any more weight overnight.

As you can see from the photos taken yesterday evening, he is active, happy and ironically looks extremely healthy...He loves his critical care (all round his chops!) and also is still eating his dried food, hay and all his veggies. His poos went a little small over the last two days but I think this was just the after-effects of the GA/dental/bloodwork he had on thursday as they are back to normal size this morning.

I'll update you on progress at the end of the week - hopefully with some good news!

Update

I have held off saying anything til now...because I didn;t want to tempt fate.

Tomorrow is decision day and I am happy to report that Willow's weight loss has stopped since he;s been on steroids. Hoorah!

Whilst he was on two doses of pred per day his weight increased up to 1.22g by tuesday. Double Hoorah!

Once he went back to once a day dosage he is now back down to 1.13 this evening (Booo!)....despite cramming him full of Critical Care and Ellas baby food (sweetcorn/pumpkin and pea please rather than carrot/apple and parsnip)... on top of him wolfing down all his dried food and veggies (and loads of hay) as per normal

He is still beautifully active, healthy glossy coat....bless him.

For info:
His lowest weight remember was 1.111 a week ago losing 10g per day and his normal weight over the last three years has been 1.28

So I will be booking him into the vets tomoz for a check up (ie NOT PTS) and ask to increase his dose back to twice a day. I'm not sure yet if he will be OK to take all the way to Suzy's this weekend to get his piggie kisses(to accompany two of my boys who are going dating ;)..we will wait and see. It's a tough call as whilst he is on steroids he is immunosuprressed and is very prone to infections.
(Sorry to keep you in suspense Suzy :p)

I am feeling a lot better about his future than i was earlier this week.

x

Still. its good news...

Well done Willow, keep fighting gorgeous boy xxxxx

Hope you're ok, we have all been thinking of you, Mum says you deserve a giant lemon cake next time I visit

~hugs~

Blimey my heart was in my mouth as I waited for this to load. That does sounds promising, keep fighting Willow, you can do it.

Hope the vet agrees to up the steroids again (Gert was on the same ones a while back).

So pleased to read this, Well done Willow! He's a beautiful looking boy.

OK whee not getting too excited, but whee are pretty happy to hear that Willow hasn't lost anymore weight and seems to be responding to the meds xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxo
