Adult Guinea Pig
I said goodbye to my gorgeous snuggly Piglet this morning.
A couple of weeks ago she became very bloated and was struggling, looking very wobbly on her feet. The vet and I suspected her arthritis was causing her pain so put her on pain killers every day to see if it helped. After a long weekend of tummy massaging every 2 hours and syringe feeding (until she decided it wasn't for her and she'd rather stick her head in the bowl) she got over the bloat and really perked up. She put weight back on and had a new lease of life, even putting her feet up on the bars while she wheeked the house down for breakfast, something she'd never done before.
She didn't want her breakfast yesterday morning and had become very bloated over night, only I could feel a lump near her tummy which I hadn't felt before so I took her straight to the vets. She was so bloated the ultrasound wasn't going to show anything so we came home with more bloat meds and booked to go back this afternoon when hopefully the bloat would be reduced and we could have a look at the lump. I sat up with her until late last night, she just wanted to snuggle up, didn't want her meds, had a tiny nibble at some food but I felt she had started giving up. I said my goodbyes not expecting to see her in the morning she was peaceful and snuggled up with Amelia.
When I woke up she was clearly in distress trying to eat her cosy and biting on to the bars, clearly in pain. I took her straight to the vets but she passed away in the waiting room. I knew there was nothing they could do for her other than stop her pain but she went by herself. I wish it could of been a peaceful passing for her.
Piglet was just over 6 1/2 years old and had come to live with me in February this year after her sister died. Her owner, a lady I worked with didn't want her to be on her own and the kids had grown up and didn't want any more guinea pigs so she asked if Piglet could come and live with me.
Piglet was the biggest wheeker of them all. She had a really unique 'voice' one I tried to capture on video many times but she always fell silent when the camera came out.
She put her whole body into her wheeking, ear flapping and all. She had been so well loved with her previous family she was really tame and would just sit there and let you pick her up. She loved her chin rubs and to snuggle up. She had such a sweet character and loved nothing more than to dive straight into a big pile of fresh hay or snuggle in her cosy.
Matilda and Amelia have said their goodbyes and seem to be ok, better than me.
Her previously owners have just been to pick her up. Their only request when she came to live with me was that they wanted her to be buried in their garden next to her sister when the time came.
Piglet and Tigger have fun together when you are reunited at the bridge, introduce Tigger to Hector, your toy boy.
My beautiful girl you will be missed so much. Whenever I've been sad or had a bad day you've been there for me ready and waiting for a cuddle and made everything alright.
Here she is discovering the joy of a fleece tunnel for the first time.
With her friend Matilda.
Showing off her gorgeous hair style.
Sleep tight gorgeous girl.
