Looking for advice really

We had to have our little man Buttons PTS today, we had only had him 6 months and roughly only 8months old.
He seemed to deteriorate very quickly within 3 days he had rapid weight loss, looked very sickly, would eat very little so took him to the vets and whilst the vet was checking him over he found a very large lump. The vet checked him over and basically said it's not looking good, he confirmed that Buttons had a URI but this was secondary to this. He believed it was a tumour and advised that looking at him/ his breathing etc he wouldn't survive much longer. So made the decision to let him go. My concern is did I make the right decision? Also how to help my other little man get over it, he is eating fine at the moment chomping on his veg. My oh doesn't want another guinea pig but I believe this isn't good for my other little piggy. Should we introduce another piggy and if so how do we do it
Sorry for the long lost

So sorry for your loss. :(
I think you made a right and brave decision to put him to sleep.
I'm not an expert, but such rapid weight loss suggests me something was seriously wrong.

Have you read the sticky thread "Looking After A Bereaved Guinea Pig" in this section? It has lots of info and tips.

I'm so sorry for your loss.
Did you do the right thing? Well it sounds like your vet was right. Buttons deteriorated fast and it would have been a battle to try to save him. His tumour would have needed to be operated on and being as he was so weak he may not have survived the op, assuming it was operable. The vet would then have had to test the tumour to see if it was benign or cancerous, and all the while Buttons would have required syringe feeding to try to help him to recover, plus her would have been on medication for his URI. Even assuming the tumour was operable, which it perhaps wasn't, it sounds like the odds were stacked against him and it was likely that all your would have achieved is prolonging his suffering.
The fact is he was dying from what he had. PTS was a kind decision to make.

In addition to the advice from @SuperRupa to read the thread Looking After A Bereaved Guinea Pig I also would want to recommend reading this one too: Introducing And Re-introducing Guinea Pigs

A rescue would be a good way to go about getting him a new companion. A good rescue will encourage you to bring piggy along for him to choose a new friend. That way they will be more likely to bond well and be compatible together. Guinea pigs certainly benefit from company.

I'm so very sorry you have lost your little Buttons. Popcorn free Buttons. Hugs xx

Thanks very much for the advice have read through those and will look at getting another piggy.
Not sure how I go about rehoming a guinea pig I can't find anyone near where I live (Wolverhampton uk)

Many thanks

I am so sorry for your loss, if that had been my piggy in the circumstances I would have done the same.
It's a brave mum that knows when to say goodbye. Part of the grieving process is there are guilt feelings, but you have nothing to feel guilty about.
Sleep Tight Buttons
Now playing over the rainbow bridge

If you put your postcode in the rescue locator in the above green bar it will tell you the nearest rescue to you if you ring first there date them so you can be sure they are compatible. It could take 3 to 4 weeks.

I am so sorry for the loss of your little piggy. You made without a shadow of doubt the right decision to help him across the rainbow bridge, it is the last act of love we can make for our little ones. And when he needed you the most your where there for him, I know it hurts but in time the pain will fade and you will remember the good times.

Zoe I live in Wolves too. I know where there are lots of rescue piggies! We are blessed for rescues in Midlands. Walsall RSPCA and coesley Guinea pig rescue. I will pm you tomorrow

Once again so very sorry for your loss

Sleep well little one
RIP Buttons

Hi thanks for all your kind words I know Buttons is in a better place. Nibbles is doing well just seems a little lonely, he is eating and drinking well and comes out for a cuddle but whenever I go to check on him he seems more quiet than normal
