Tonight we had to make the decision to have our beautiful syrian hamster Bella PTS. She had been ill for a few weeks with an abcess which actually tunred out to be a tumour.

I had a feeling all day that she would leave us and was stuck at work wanting to get back to her. Anyway we got home and knew it was time as soon as we saw her and rushed her to the vet before they were due to close.

Bella came to live with us in November 2009 after being dismissed as bitey and dumped in the P@H adoption centre. This was a load of rubbish, she only ever bit me once and it was my own fault for kissing her through the bars and she bit my lip :))

She was such a gentle giant and reminded us of the bear from the children's tv series Gentle Ben. Hence the name Gentle Bella.

Bella managed to chew her way through about 17 balls in just a few months before she grew out of her little habit. I lost count of the amount of times we caught her running across the floor before we realised we should sellotape her in.

As she got older she would often be found asleep next to Daisy Duke in the hall (both in their balls) before going off for another quick run.

We will love you forever Bella bum, go find your friends at the bridge. Daisy is waiting to play with you.

Thank you everyone, Pebble you made me cry (is a good thing I needed to let it out). Been having lots of hamster cuddles tonight, and they are all running in their balls and ramming my legs so is cheering me up slightly. One of the mice sat on my hand too. Oh and Izzie went through the whole of veggie time wearing a bit of lettuce as a wig.
