On Sunday I sadly had to let my beloved Nerys (“Lady”) go. She was 8 years old and very frail after battling a series of health issues since April.

Nerys is the last of my Tribe founding members of the first generation, so it is very much the end of an era! She has been with me since I adopted her and her sister Nia as new companions when my Llewelyn’s beloved older lady Dizzy was becoming increasingly frail in order to prevent him from pining.

Nia and her much larger litter sister Nerys. They were nervous, unhandled and unwanted children's pets, adopted from the RSPCA Walsall in May 2009.

As Dizzy’s passing also coincided we my being able to have more than just a couple of guinea pigs, I embarked on an exciting journey of gradually building up a group of up to 13 sows around my neutered boar Llewelyn and his successor Hywel over the curse of several years.

Nerys has been there with me all the way!

She and Nia had literally razor-sharp short baby nails and required very careful handling during the first few weeks if I didn’t want to end up with bloody scratches.

Nerys' feet just before her first - very careful - nail cut. At that time, she was a terrible one for pulling her feet back, which is why I had to wait long enough to have a bit of safety wiggle room!

Nerys never gave up a calorie she could not hang onto, right until the last, and she enjoyed being carried out onto lawn for little outings even when she developed major mobility issues in the last months. She also discovered that if she sat on a full pellet bowl, she could eat out of the neighbouring one to down a double portion!

Nerys was happy to let her much smaller, but energetic sister Nia run the Tribe and preferred to do her own thing. Usually her best friends were very submissive sows, who she looked after kindly once they had passed her infamous squeeze test. Her favourite friend of all was gentle older lady Hafina, who suffered from premanent unsightly eye problems.

In 2013 I split her and lookalike (although not related and three years younger) companion Nesta from the Tribe to live on their own when the Tribe went through a difficult phase after a leadership takeover. Nesta is taking the loss of her beloved “auntie” Nerys hard, as they have become a closely bonded couple who have always considered themselves as family.

Because of her distinctive Battenberg bum and her equally big pigsonality, Nerys has become quite a well-known and much loved character on this forum and on facebook, as well as in the earlier issues of Guinea Pig Magazine where she reported on the Pigolympics in 2012.

Here is a last big bum orgy!

Nerys leaves a big hole in my heart and my piggy room. My husband and I miss her very much, but we are also very grateful to have had her in our lives for such a long time and to be left with so many happy and precious memories.
