Adult Guinea Pig
it is with great sadness that i am writing this new thread tonight. at 5.15pm this evening little rex was helped on his way to rainbow bridge by the vet. many of you may recall back in march when blossom, a piggy i took in had a litter of 5 babies. she had been in several back to back pregnancies and mostly it appeared to be inbreeding. she had 3 sows and 2 boars - the sows stayed with blossom whilst the boars went to live at my uncles. at the tiny age of 11 weeks chas died suddenly with no symptoms present whatsoever. the vet suspected a heart attack. then in october this year at the tender age of 7 months, lily had to be pts after suffering from suspected lymphoma. tonight came another massive blow when my uncle called to see if i could take rex to the vets as he was suddenly unwell and my aunty was ill (she's been in hospital) so could not drive. i was horrified to see how tiny he was - he has lost half his body weight in just 2 days and weighed a mere 450g! his temperature was quite low and he appeared to have given up. it was thought by the vet that he had kidney failure and after discussing it with her and looking at how quickly he had gone down hill we didn't expect him to make it through the night. the kindest thing for him was to help him on his way to his brother and sister.
RIP little Rex - run free now with chas and lily. one day we will all be together again and will once again be able to have cuddles. god bless you little man xx

this has come as such a shock - 3 of blossoms babies have now gone to the bridge. i am concerned now that nutmeg and hazel may not have a long and healthy life. it is our thinking that this is due to the inbreeding which took place. please let this be a lesson to anyone thinking of breeding. not only can it be dangerous for the sow (blossom had a prolapse after having this litter and nearly died herself) but the babies are not always healthy enough to live long lives either.
