Sweet Potato
Adult Guinea Pig
Today I wasn't greeted by two lots of bar biting at breakfast time. My sweet little Gundam was too weak to stand and was almost lifeless other than deap breathing and a few twitches. Me and Connor both got our last cuddles and Gundam even managed to give Connor a last nip to keep him in line. Our baby was rushed off to the vets where his suffering was brought to an end.
We brought home Gundam and his brother Spud from PAH nearly 6 years ago when we were living in Birmingham. We'd agreed we would share the piggies and they'd both be equally ours but there we were looking over the pool of baby Guinea pigs and at the same time we said "that one" so I brought home my Sweet Potato and Connor had Gundam. The bond between Connor and his special little piggie grew and grew and not wanting to upset his favourite human Gundam learned to climb over to my lap when he needed to pee during lap time. Gundham grew so quickly especially in the belly area so much so that it took a vet trip to reassure me he wasn't secretly a pregnant female.
I haven't always been able to give my boys the life they've deserved for the struggles they've helped me through but at least for the past 4 years he's been a very spoilt boy. He's learned a lot too... he learned broccoli isn't poison, the right side of the bars is the lucky part for bar biting, the sound of the bin lorry in the street means it's time for breakfast and most recently that when I pick him up I'm not trying to kill him.
He's been a great friend for Spud they've gotten along so well since day 1 there's never been a fall out or a squabble although he did get his ear nipped a few times if he dared to sleep in the cosiest spot. I'm sure spud will miss him even if he gets all the veg to himself and can sleep wherever he wants now.
The last week him and Spud have been approaching me for a pick up and a pellet and not running away when I pick them up which is something I never thought I'd see. And Gundam has been sleeping in the open a lot more. I thought this was just him finally feeling comfortable with me being around but now I'm wondering if this change in behaviour was a warning sign I missed. Either way I feel blessed to have had these extra cuddles and affection.
Gundam was the king of bar biting. He'd even get so focused on the bar biting that he'd take a moment to realise the food was already in his cage and Spud was picking out the best bits. I'm going to miss that bar biting. I hope you get all the best veggies beyond that rainbow bridge
