i bought my son a guinea pig for his third birthday, of course i take care of it and love on it and i just then realized how cute they are. At my sisters bridal shower today i had a friend mention they wanted to get rid of their guinea pig and i jumped at the chance. I am currently keeping them side by sid eand following the step from barmy4boars (they are both males) to introduce them. but the goofy thing is that the new one(who is bigger than my sons) stays in his hidout all the time and when he wants to eat or drink or move around at all, hi actually lifts up his igloo and stays in it as he moves around, it reminds me of cartoons, and it is so funny. should i get him a stationary shelter or just keep letting him hide all the time? any opinions?

Hello and welcome - I am new too, this is a great place!

I followed the steps from barmy4boars for introducing my pigs too, and I've had my new pig for 2 weeks and he's still hiding. Your new pig is probably just nervous, it'll take him a while to settle in. As for the moving furniture - LOL! It's up to you whether you get him a new house or not - if you get him a stationary one he might choose not to come out at all! Good luck with your boar bonding.

Goofy guinea... Aw, bless him, he sounds cute! :)

Why did you friend want to get rid of the guinea pig did she not have enough time to be with him? Might it be that he is hiding because he is just not used to a human who pays him so much attention. He should get better with time but I have found shy guineas take ages to come out of their shell....or igloo!

i think that she had bought it for her kids and ended up taking care of it. i knew when i bought my sons i would be the one taking care of it, so i really dont mind having a second. the worst part is i think i have a little bit of an allergy to the sweet little things. but that wont stop me from taking care of them they are so darn cute. ::) she didnt tell me what the new ones name was so i may have to come up with a new name. hes so cool looking All black on the top and brown on the bottom. (short hair). :smitten: they are both really skittish when i first try to pick them up, but really comfortable once i catch them. really sweet too. my sons will start chirping and sqeaking after a little bit, but i havent been able to get the new one to say anything yet. they poked their little faces at each other and sniffed each other for a minute with no conflicts through the wire. so far so good .

Hi & welcome Montanamama :)

How funny that he moves around with the igloo on his back. It does take some of them along time to gain confidence.

I introduced my piggie boy to a new pal two weeks ago & they are getting along great. I sterilized out the cage & dishes etc. with baby sterilizing solution first & took out the usual log bridge & toys, putting different things in & in different places. Then I put them in there together & all has been well! So hopefully your two will get along great too. I think it will help the new shy piggie to become more confident having a friend to follow.
