Goopy Eye

We've been pig-sitting Sundae for years, and he ALWAYS has a goopy eye. His family hasn't ever figured out why his one eye is always so goopy. Any ideas? We have him right now and I've been cleaning it out a few times each day, but it just never gets any better.

What exactly do you mean by 'goopy'?

Is the eyelid red or inflamed?
Is the eyeball itself clear and healthy?
What colour is the fluid, and where on the eye is it coming from?

I will take a photo later when I'm home. The eye is clear, seems like the goop is coming from the corner of the eye, and it's it's a creamy white color, thick and sticky, like what my kids would call "eye boogers". LOL. Eyelid isn't red or inflamed at all.

Do you think this may be the normal eye cleaning fluid that piggies produce to lubricate their eyeballs. They produce a thick whitish substance that they then spread over their eye to keep it clean. Does this occur all the time or just when the piggy has had a bit of a wash and brush up.? If it's all the time it could be a problem. Just guessing but will wait to see your pic.

This first picture is the worst the I have ever seen it. I cleaned it before I left today (about 4 hours ago) and this is how it looked when I got home just now. The picture on the right is after I cleaned it out. He has had this issue (although not as bad as picture #1 typically) for as long as I have known him. He's around 3 years old I believe.

That looks like a hay poke , and quite a bad one ,
bathe eye with cold tea and see a vet , ASAP .

A blind pig in one or two eyes can cope just as well as a sighted pig.

That pic reminds me of my old Jane RIP , he arived here many years ago , with a partner
sow Called Molly .
Jake was blind in both eyes,

Sorry to hi jack a post ,but seeing that post has brought back old memories

do any of the stalwart members remember my old Jake and his partner Molly ?
There story ! They were handed in to a rescue , apparently r s p c a confiscated the pair along with other animals
as the family were not providing proper care,
a few weeks later , molly delivery 6 beautiful white baby's,
neither mum or dad had a great deal of white in them , but Molly delivered 5 practicaly white pups, and an all brown one (I call here half pint )
All 6 of them could not have been less like there parents ,

That was many years ago and I still have most of them .

I agree he needs to see a vet. If it is something he has always had it could be an overactive tear-duct but a hay poke needs to be ruled out, and he would need pain relief if that were the case, some eye drops and the vet needs to put a dye in his eye to make sure there is no damage.

think a vet visit is needed. He may have some grass/hay under his eyelid irritating it& the gloop is forming as a barrier. He may even have an ingrowing eyelash/es (entropion) or blocked tear duct, maybe even a slight infection if its been going on for a while. would the owners object if u were to take him? I should imagine it can get sore?
Eyes are so delicate &can go badly wrong incredibly quickly-often with a suitable treatment they heal up remarkably well&you would never know there had been a problem.

Does sundaes owner realise there is a potential problem?
