Adult Guinea Pig
Gorgeous George came to live with us from Freshfields Rescue in 2008. He was a neutered boar and around 7 months old.
He was a massive ginger chunky monkey with gorgeous back eyes: very dashing and handsome. He had girls and food permanently on his mind! When not snoozing in the hay tray or on top of a cozy, George was to be found rumblestrutting the 6 ladies with whom he shared his life and cage.
Ten days ago he developed an abscess which seemed to come up overnight. I took him to the vets who lanced it very skillfully and it healed well. Sadly however, George never regained his appetite and despite my regular syringe feeds his condition deteriorated. He seemed to be suffering from some discomfort in his mouth which was not improved by pain relief and made him unwilling to eat and swallow the food that was syringed into him. We were really waiting to stabilize him after the abscess so that his teeth could be examined, but unfortunately this never happened.
Tonight he was put to sleep: the final act of kindness that I felt I could offer to my beloved pet who was clearly in discomfort and beyond the point of being able to recover.
I am grateful for the years we had together and that George had such a contented and fulfilled life with his food and girlies. We will all miss his cheeky antics and constant reminders that he was top pig: taking pole position at the pellet bowl, rumblestrutting and always occupying the most comfortable position!
Here are some pics of my gorgeous boy:
