image.webp So 4 days ago our gorgeous piggy Marshmallow passed away during the night, we had picked up 2 days before that he wasn't eating. After taking him to the emergency vets they gave him antibiotics and syringed fed and watered him. The following morning we took him to our local vets where they did a blood test as they were concerned it was kidney disease as he had a peculiar odour from his mouth, the blood tests were inconclusive and they were unsure if he was just dehydrated or whether it was kidney disease. Anyway that day we took him home and were prescribed antibiotics for him. We syringe fed and watered him and went to bed at 2 am, I woke up at 6am suddenly and just knew instantly that he had passed away. My OH went to check as I couldn't bare the thought of seeing him and he comfirmed he had passed away. I'm now left heartbroken and can't stop the tears as I write this post. Have any of you had any experiences to a similar situation? Please all give a cuddle to your piggies for Marshmallow, as I miss him dearly and it pains me to know I'll never hear his popcorning shenanigans again!

I'm really sorry for your loss. I lost one of mine last winter, also after a very short illness without any clear answers as to why she died. It's very hard. A lot of the time guinea pigs and other small animals will hide symptoms up until the last moment because it's a disadvantage in the wild to show illness, as those animals are targeted by predators. It can make an illness really hard to notice until it's very far advanced. ((HUGS)) and again, I'm so sorry about Marshmallow. He was certainly a handsome boy and I can tell he was much loved!

I'm sorry for your loss, it's always hard to lose an animal Especially when you have to see them suffer, it's so hard to watch knowing there's nothing you can do. But know he's in a better place and he can never suffer again. May you feel comfort in these hard times.

I'm so sorry. You clearly did your best for Marshmallow but sometimes you can't save them, it's heartbreaking. So sorry for your loss.

That's very sad indeed, sweet little Marshmallow. Sometimes when they are ill they fade away fast, and sometimes there's just nothing that you can do.
I have three guinea pigs in two years. The first was after a very invasive op to remove some lumps from the bladder. She never really recovered and her body shut down. I tried to nurse her back to health but really there was no hope I don't think.
The second had a heart condition that I had not picked up on, and she went suddenly.
The third was an elderly piggy who had a chest infection, medication, and appeared to be recovering, but she slipped away after an active and seemingly happy morning.

Each one has been hard for their own reasons, and of course because they were all very much loved.

It is hard when you do all you can for them, but at least you know that you have done your best. Huge hugs to you. She was a beautiful little girl. xx

I'm so sorry for your loss. It is difficult to say what could have been wrong.
