Got lots of seeds at the shop today to plant in my piggy garden :)

We got:

Coriander
Carrot
Chives
Thyme
Parsley
Lettuce (all year round not iceberg)

Is it safe for the buns and guineas to eat all of these? Then tey can have an hour a day to munch it all :)

Thanks!

Thats great! All ok for piggies but not too much carrot (too high in vit A) and not too much parsley (high in calcium). They can eat the green foliage of the carrots as much as they like I think :smitten:

Awesome thanks! With the speed they all eat at i'll have to have to let the poor plants rest every now and then and to actually pop out of the ground before being gobbled down ;D

What I have done is plant 3 different patches so I can rotate them, then you usually have one patch that has stuff in it! Have a look at a site called www.planetguinea.co.uk. They sell cereal grasses, yarrow, plantain seeds and more which piggies love. They cost about £2.50 and you get lots!

:) thanks!

We have 2 places I can plant the seeds but I can always section one in half :)

I have just planted my plantain seeds and yarrow seeds and have got quite a lot left over. Would you like them? Ask your mum if it is ok first and if you want them I will pop them in the post to you!

:) Hmmm, am I too generous LOL! I suppose that when you think every seed makes a plant thats a lot of Plantain and Yarrow and Plantain isn't the most sociable of Herbage!

Thankyou so much for the offer :) I dont think mum would let me though... thanks anyway :)

Just curious..what's Plantain and Yarrow? We grow loooooooooads of stuff and are growing more herbs this year for the pigs, so wondering if I should plant some :P (if we have room...don't ask how a family with 4 people can fill up 4 greenhouses, 2 allotments and a garden :D)

Plantain and yarrow are natural herbage which piggies love! Have a look at the planet guinea site, they have those and more. They add variety to their diet of veggies and dried food/hay. Also good for their growing teeth as promotes chewing action.

Baby-wilson:Thats ok, just a thought as you were on a seed sowing spree!

Okies - thanks. Growing loooads of stuff already so will have to ask dad if we have any room left. :D How anyone can run out of the amount we have I have no idea but we seem to every year :P

As they are vigourous growing, you could plant them in large pots so they don't take over the garden!1 Thats what I have done. ;D

:) thanks! still havent planted them ;D trying to decide if I should move the piggy playground....

Plantain loves patio pots and doesn't need a change of compost every year, you can even plant it in garden soil.

I must admit, I didn't have a lot of luck with the herbage last year - it got totally eaten by bloomin' garden pests of the non-furry variety. Have had better success with the grass.

Aww damm bugs! Were going to grow the seeds in pots first... then when theyre ready plant them into the garden :)

Which sort of pests Pelicano? I grow mine in tubs to save it from slugs, but have grown a Piggy Patch of Herbage very successfully in the garden. You may find it comes up better this year (that is if you haven't dug it up LOL!). Why not grow it in a pot for the first year and in late summer plant it out in the garden- it will die off but should reappear the following year.

I have 25g of Plantain on Ebay at the moment for £1 plus 55p package and postage if you're interested... thats a lot of Plantain!

Well I'm not sure, to be honest! I was growing it in a pot outside, and just wondered why it wasn't growing too well, then realised that all the leaves had been eaten away - never saw what had found it all so irresistable!
