I was in jolleyes yesterday buying toys and everything for my new additions next weekend this little girl was by herself and completely fell in love with her I am very worried about her size though she's tiny and having a hard time to believe she's 8weeks old like told by the staff I have her in a cage, at the minute she's still very scarred but is starting to let me stroke her. We have called her twillight hoping to either get my boys neutered or adopt her a friend in the summer so she's not alone. I have checked her sex aswell as the staff just kind of looked at each other when I asked and they said girl. But She is certainly a girl going off pictures I've seen in the Internet.

I actually don't believe in buying animals from pet shops as I have had guinea pigs in the past and 1 had severe mouth deformities which meant he needed regular dentals and needed fed mushy food as he could not chew properly. So I'm hoping this little girl will be fine.

I will get better pictures once she's settled

Gosh she's so small, hardly looks big enough to be away from her mum...bless her. I'd leave your two boars together as they are probably very happy with their relationship and get her a friend, bearing in mind quarantine timing. Perhaps an older sow from a rescue that does bonding would be good and then the older one can mother her?

You probably already know this but if you neuter your boars and then bond them with your sow the boars will fight each other.

Sorry I had no idea about this! I've never had a girl piggy before just boys. Could I keep the girl and the boys in the same room or would they be able to sense her and potentially start a fight? Just asking as I was looking at getting a hutch from the rabbit hutch company a 2 tier one which is just 2 singles if that makes sense 6ftx2ft so they have plenty of room but if having them that close together could make the boys fall out I will have to rethink my housing!

Your hutch should be fine as long as the boys are on top.

She looks so small and cute!

This is really making me rethink how old Oreo was when we got him. Pets At Home (worst place I know) told me he and his cage mate Toffee were 14 weeks old. I suspect Toffee was the runt of the litter so he is a bit smaller. It's obvious they weren't litter mates so they may have been slightly different.. I will try and dig out the photos later from my mum's phone of them at 14/15 weeks but I have a few of them supposedly 27 to 28 weeks old on my phone. I got them Saturday 17th September 2011 so I've always celebrated their birthday on 31st May.

Toffee and Oreo supposedly 27-28 weeks old. For comparison, that is a Ferplast bottle that Toffee is under. How old do they look?

I'm sorry the photo is bad. I wasn't great at photography.

I havent had any experience with boys and girls kept in the same room. We always kept the males totally separate when I was a child. I know with rabbits that the smell of other rabbits can lead to referred agression (ie fighting each other cos they cant get to the others in other cages) but I am not sure if its the same with piggies.

Hopefully someone who knows these things will come along soon.

@Wiebke boys and girls in same room?

What a gorgeous little piggy!

Hi! It is very difficult to say with babies, as birth weights can vary a lot, but she looks very young and in urgent need of a companion to me. Can you contact a good rescue to see whether they have have a sow or a neutered boar ready for adoption?
Unfortunately, she needs a guide and companion NOW more than ever in her life to give her security and to - importantly - socialise her so she doesn't end up with bonding and behaviour issues later in life. By summer, the formative months are over.
The problem with neutering one of your boars is that you then need to wait yet another 6 weeks until he is 100% safe to live with a sow. I have the unplanned daughter of a supposedly safe over 5 weeks post op boar (not one of mine), just to prove that particular point. It may be rare, but it happens, and there is nothing to say that it cannot happen to you...

You can have boars and sows in the same room if necessary, but ideally either spaced well apart or the boys above the sows or at least with a large opaque divider the prevents female pheromones from crossing to the boars and upsetting them. But of you have the option to have them in a different room, please consider it.

Hi thank you for your information I will look into getting her a friend sooner rather then later! Get my 2 boys tomorrow morning so once I have them sorted I will get in touch with some rescues see if I can get her a friend. Got a couple more pictures of her. She's so friendly and starting to come to me.

Oh she's beautiful - no wonder you couldn't resist! :nod:

I keep a boar in a separate part of the piggies care, he's got another 3 weeks after his neutering. They are fine like that although the boy gets a bit vocal sometimes & try's to get in with the lady's. He's a bit of a thug. Lol
The girls are a tease they lay by the divider, so he can see & smell them, then leg it up the other end of the cage. Nothing causes us concern though.
You urgently need to get that sow a friend though, she's so small, & she could start pining, & maybe go off her food. If you go to a rescue it could be a while before you can get a sow. I'd ring them & ask. Or I know people don't agree with me but I would go back to a shop to get another one. Some people have had some some issues with P&H but at least you can get they vet to fix it so you are not paying out a the time. BUT ask at a rescue first.

I want her :love::drool: She's stunning!

Age is hard to tell, when I got my first two from a rescue they were 8 weeks but one was tiny compared to her sister due to being the runt of the litter. And she's still tiny! Currently around 200 grams lighter than her litter mate.

But seriously, she is gorgeous and you're a lucky mummy and she's a lucky piggy! :)

I went into that pet shop and there was loads of pigs cramped into one little plastic cage I wanted to take them all home x

I know it's so sad isn't it? :( I try not to go in places that sell animals for that reason! P@H always have loads in together and it makes me sad.

They had little tiny mice and they were all piled on top of each other and one on the bottom looked like he was more than sleeping I mentioned it to one of the members of staff but he just said okay he will get on to it :/ what shocked me more is that they stay in them cages constantly...no interaction or exercise nothing There was a panorama episode about it I think x

Omg Louise I am so so sorry! Poor little baby :( You did your best for her, I'm so sorry she left so quickly. I hope you're okay.

@ChloeCee98 it's horrible the way they're treated :(

Omg so sorry for your loss! What was wrong with her? That was a shock to read at the end of your thread. Hope your okay x

I'm not really sure what happened she was a very small piggy didn't grow much from these pictures this morning she wasn't eating (usually she's squeaking away and excited for her veg) her back end was weak and after I rung vets and got the carrier sorted she started fitting/seizure (which is a sight I don't want to see again) when I got her to the vets she was gasping for air so all vet could do was help her along I'm devastated my 2 boy pigs are outside but she was indoors so got snuggles on a night time :(

I'm so sorry for your awful loss. You did all you could for her and gave her a loving home even if it was only for a short time. Rest in peace little girl x
