A student left her uni flat last week to return home for the summer to her parents home. She left behind the guinea pig she had bought in the market two months earlier. Apparently she said " Oh I'll just leave it loads of food and let the landlord sort it out."

Fortunately for this little fella another student called his mum who drove for over an hour to pick the gp up. She has looked after him for over a week but he has now come into rescue in south devon. He's fine, but it could have been such a different story. He's happy here and enjoying the space and attention. The student had kept him in a hamster cage in the bedroom, his diet was poor. The girl couldn't care less about his welfare, he presumably had served his purpose.

The most worrying aspect of this is after talking to the mum and her son who rescued him this is apparently quite common. The son said very many students bought pets for their rooms but just abandoned them at the end of the term. Rabbits, hamsters, piggies and snakes are the most frequently found animals. My concern too is do landlords really deal with anything they find and how many are just left too long anyway :(

Has anyone else experienced this at all, I don't normally cover a city area so this is perhaps only new to me but it is a real and worrying trend. It's terrifying to think that these are the people who will one day become parents, !!!

I suggested to the mum that I would send some flyers to the uni and college in the autumn. She advised that I should be careful as come Xmas I could find myself with 200 guinea pigs..........................I have a nasty feeling that she wasn't entirely joking.

A sad sad day for me but at least one little life will be ok from today.

Have any other rescues had any success with liasing with uni's and colleges? I would love to know how it has been approached.

ps Have called him Dougal on account of his long hair!

Oh that is so sad :( I am quite shocked as I wouldnt have thought students would want pets in, what is effectively, temporary accomodation and pets are usually not allowed. I think your idea about contacting uni`s about it is a good one, it would increase awareness about this. It is just awful and I am glad he is ok, but as you say, how many more animals are being left that no one knows or cares about? :'(

How awful to just abandon a pet, I haven't heard of it in Birmingham but my two haven't lived in halls etc but stayed at home. There are 3 uni's in Birmingham and several in surrounding towns, it doesn't bear thinking about. :(

No, but we are a university town so will look into that one, am always trying to think of new 'audiences'.

Maybe we could come up with a printable flyer? I could help distribute flyers around the 2 Nottingham Unis....

A sad but true occurance - I was told of a pig found in the garage of a house up for sale, left by the previous owners when they moved out. If the lady who found him hadn't looked in the garage, he'd probably be dead! WHY? :tickedoff: :tickedoff:

The people who my auntie baught her house from left a rabbit in the garden, it was definately theirs as it had a hutch and feeding bowl, no food though apart from grass. My auntie kept him and he had a happy life with them :) but its horrible that people can do that to their pets, id rather leave my boyfriend than my cat or piggies lol! x

Getting hold of the student union would be a good idea and putting posters up flyers too. My mum cleans for a uni halls of residence and they arent allowed any pets so hasnt come across this problem yet! Also hubby works in a uni too and has never heard of this so lets hope its not all unis.

Oh... daer.. I had no idea this sort of thing was going on :'( I'm so glad that particular piggy was ok... but what about all the others out there?!
oooof - if I could get hold of that girl.... :tickedoff: She needs telling - she bought the piggy - she should be held responsible for her actions... honestly some people ::)

All I can say is >:( (and :) that the piggy is ok.)

God. Every day something surprises us eh? God...they should have licences for pets!

People thing piggies are not valid somehow, do you get that impression? I mean, people wouldn't do it if it was a cat and a dog so why is it ok just cos the thing can be contained in a cage :tickedoff: :tickedoff:

ok...so it does happen to cats and dogs too i'm sure, but there doesn't seem to be much fuss made about pigs hams and buns like there is for cats and dogs. Peoples attitudes need to be changed :tickedoff: :tickedoff: :police:

Thats disgusting, how can people be so heartless. At least you"ve rescued him so theres one happy ending.

How aweful! I'm glad to say the students I know/have known would NEVER do something like that. How aweful!
