My boar (think he's 5-6 months old) has one toenail that's turning sideways, but it's doing it at/inside the finger far as I can tell. Thought at first maybe his finger was broken, but it feels firm in the joint and he's not screaming or anything if I touch it or acting any different. Unsure if their toes can swell, but his isn't swollen. His nails are still pointed.

As a kid, I had a female that had toenails that turned different directions, but they where like little branches being extruded out and stopped looking like toenails almost altogether.

Is his toenail turning to the side considered normal? If it was a human hand, it'd be the right-hand middle finger, and the nail would be pointing to the right index finger.

My past piggy, Bunny, which was a Swiss Teddy has toenails like that. The nails are curling and quite big (thick) too. We always have to trim it more frequently than the others to avoid it getting through skin just in case.

Curling nails is usually a sign of ageing in piggies. Many of my past piggies have had it as they matured. It's just important to keep them trimmed regularly. The curled nails don't cause any particular problem for the piggies unless they are overgrown.
