There are always loads of piggies on gumtree and such like, I sometimes check the freeads and if I see ones for pets that can't be kept due to moving home, illness or other apparently genuine reason then I will email them and give them details of local rescues that might be able to help. For example I saw a local woman with a bearded dragon free to a good home because she has a 9 month old son and is expecting twins now and won't be able to cope so I passed on the details for a small pet rescue that I know takes reptiles too.

However you have to be wary as breeders use the site to sell animals and give away ill, "ugly" or now useless animals for free (i.e. they aren't producing as good as others). There is a sticky on here about the danger of taking in free ad animals as well

We got our kitten (now 9 months) by chance. We alread had an older cat (3 years) and hadn't planned on getting another. However a lady I met through Avon had a new kitten, absolutely gorgeous and I fell in love. Next time I saw her a few weeks later, and the kitten had to go as it was 'evil' and hated women. Was perfectly fine with me, turned out their little toddler had cornered the kitten behind the tv unit so the kitten scratched her. She said shed listed him on gumtree, poor thing was being kept shut up in a tiny dog crate. I never expected husband to agree to us having him, but when I told him how he was being kept he said yes. Why they ever though a young child & kitten would get on with no supervision I'll never know all he did was react as any animal would when it felt threatened.

I try not to look because it always upsets me :0

Some of the reasons etc and selling adverts are awful but I always do it for the genuine sounding ones who just don't know what to do especially when they put it won't be first come first served as they want to make sure their pet goes to a good home. I would hate to ever find myself in the situation where I could no longer have my animals

Me too. I found one today saying "i have 4 rabbits and 2 guinea pigs that are desperate for new LOVING homes,my husband has bought a puppy and the older she is getting the more determined she is to kill these poor little things, she is terrorising them, i have 2 male and 2 female rabbits and 2 female guinea pigs"
Some people :(
