I curently have 3 male guinea pigs and may possibly get 2 more this week, my local garden centre has 2 male gp's in a very small confined space and they have been there for about 2 months now, they are in dirty conditions, they have no fresh air and no shelter to hide away in, a lady who is local to me rescues guineas and she has had a word with the seller about their conditions and he has assured her that it is a "one-off" and he won't be selling more, I have a spare hutch....should i take them ?

If you have the time and finance to care for two more guineas then if you like them you could get them
Keep them away from your existing boys, the smell of new males might distrupt your group and also as they 2 have been kept in poor conditions they may be suffering from health problems which could spread to your own guineapigs.
If the local shelter has been involved could they not take them? If they do require medical treatment this could be the best place for them as shelters see and have experience in all kinds of illnesses in guineas.
Good luck

I would also haggle with him for to see if he is willing to let them go for free or for cost. Sounds cheeky but you don't really want to give him profit.

Good luck!

Agree with both Vikki and Louise. Martin tried haggling with the garden centre we got Xander from who wasn't being kept in tip-top condition, but unfortunately they weren't having any of it, but it was worth a try!

Yeah, if you have the room and the money, go for it! i'm sure you'll look after them well :)

It's very hard to walk away if you see guineas who you think are suffering, or not enjoying the life they deserve. Like everyone else has said, if you think you can give them a good home, go for it! Let us know what you decide, hope it all goes well x:)

I wonder if this garden centre has a license to sell animals? ... if not and you feel that they are not being kept in good conditions, then I would let the RSPCA know ... anonymously if you prefer.

I would tell the garden centre that I was not happy with the way in which the piggies were being housed and I would take them off his hands free of charge and would take the matter no further.

On the minus side though could be the fact that he normally says that it is a "one-off" .... personally I would be revisiting that garden centre to make sure that it was a one-off!

Sorry to sound harsh, but it really hurts me to hear that shops can keep animals in poor conditions that are in full view of shoppers and get away with it.

I really feel for these piggies and I would also probably let me heart rule my head also x

PS. I had an issue with a major pet store many years ago ... I think the shop begun with a P and ended with an H!

It was the way in which they were keeping their hamsters :(. You will find my thread on the forum. I challenged them as it was disgusting, that I would report them to the RSPCA and be back to check on them.

Things definitely improved in that store!

I brought the two guinea pigs home on friday! they are very shy and timid at the moment, luckily the good weather over the past few days has meant they could spend plenty of time in the run on the grass with fresh air (for the 1st time) they are in a nice large hutch at the moment getting used to everything new, they are very vocal and were squeaking for ages when they were in the run for the first time.
My 4 year old has named them Buzz and Woody.x)

I have had a very similar thing with my new boars. Had 2 already when I went to the pet shop and saw 2 more in a cramped cage in poor condtions.
I too bought them home. It was abit tricky at first but we soon got things organised and things are going great! I'm really chuffed things have worked out for you too, xx:):):)

You must feel proud that they are happy now, you did what we all would have done!

Look forward to pics of the happy boys x

Congratulations on your two new piggies ... post some piccies when you can and we would love to see them!

Well done also for giving these guys a chance of a loving home.
