Hi - We currently feed our two on SS Guinea pig, but I am looking to change them to grain free as I've read good things about it. I was just wondering if anybody had any good recommendations?

SS do a grain free version that many of us feed to our piggies, the main ingredient is timothy hay. I was going to photograph the bag for you but the piggies heard me so I had to sneak out before they started wheeking for an extra meal...! Its a lilac and white bag anyway that says "grain free" in big letters at the top :)

My girls were on a mixture of Harringtons and Burgess but after reading the reviews on here of the SS grain free I slowly changed them over and they love it. By the end of the switch over they were leaving the other two and only eating the SS grain free ones.

I feed the ss grain free, before that was Harringtons, and before that burgess, but stopped burgess because of the alfalfa aka lucerne, so watch out 👍

I switched from SS to SS grain free earlier this year after one piggy had stones. The only thing that annoys me is it is only a small bag and only comes in one size. I used to buy the 10kg sack of SS but To be honest they are much more limited with their pellets now. I would still like to be able to buy a 3-5kg bag though

I use the grain free nuggets as having read about it here I felt that it would be better for mine.
Photo of the bag which set off the piggies.
A rustling bag in their room warrants very loud wheeking.
There are consequences

I'm in the process of changing Gremlin from SS to SS grain free...... 3rd time lucky as he's now choosing the grain free over the ordinary.... Yay!
Brilliant - it must taste okay then!

I switched from SS to SS grain free about a year ago. More recently I have started alternating between the SS grain free and Versele Laga Complete Cavia nuggets, which I believe are grain free, as my 3 seem to like the latter a lot, more than the SS.

Mine also prefer the Versele Laga to SS grain free. They also really like JR Farm grain free, they do have the SS ones as well as I can get them locally rather than having to order on line.

Mine tried Versele Laga on the recommendation of another forum member about a year ago, rave reviews so I bought 4 bags to get free delivery! Not one single pellet was eaten... they have a sort of herby smell don't they? Anyway my lot must have taken a vote and opted to boycott not only the pellets but any veg that had touched them! Fussy :) I am contemplating trying the Haybox pellets but I might just get tjose as a treat and stick with SS grain free for everyday as my lot are a bit set in their ways and dont like change!

They are funny aren't they @PigglePuggle . Mine take ages to take to anything new. I tried the Woodlands grain free recently, Spike and Peanut wouldn't eat any nuggets at all if there was just one of those in the bowl. The other's ate them eventally but reluctantly, we finished that bag this week so I won't be bothering with those again!

Ah right - I've got my rabbit on the Versele Laga rabbit food and she loves that, so I may try the guinea version then!

I have fed my piggies on Science Selective for years but I have bought a bag of SS grain free a few months ago which I haven’t opened yet as I am using up my existing bag of SS.

I have always been very happy with SS and wonder what the advantages of feeding the grain free variety will be. I would hate to upset my piggies so I will mix them two varieties together to start with. However, I am a little worried about converting to grain free completely.

I switched a while ago and discovered that my herd much prefer the grain free pellets to any others.
They usually eat their daily quota and would eat more if I gave them extra

All our lot (rabbits and guinea pigs) are on the Versele Laga grain free.
The rabbits refuse to eat anything else, but the guinea pigs will frankly eat anything you throw into their cages!
They all get super excited when i pick up a few free samples at the pet shop and offer them soemthing new.

I have SS grain free for my skinny pigs and Milo. However, the other three are very set in their ways and refuse to eat anything other than Harringtons.
Glad to hear someone else uses SS grain free for skinny pigs, when we brought Tallulah home her foster carer (who wasnt a piggy expert, she was just a nice lady who took home any unwanted exotic animals she found locally!) tried to tell us she needed special high calorie pellets... well I wasnt having any of that, I thought she's basically a guinea pig and can eat the same as the other pigs and if she needs extra calories she can have a bit of extra carrot or babycorn and some more hay! But I've always wondered/hoped I did the right thing there :)
