Grass and lots of it.

My driver knows quite a lot about animals as he grew up on a farm. As for me, I couldn't find a tree in a forest.

Each morning he goes out and collects a certain type of grass my Guinea Pigs love. He only takes it from unpopulated areas so as to be certain it hasn't been sprayed with pesticides.

My Guineas eat it all day, every day and prefer it over any other food. I'm afraid they may be neglecting their vegetables and pellets.

Should I be allowing them to eat as much of the grass as they wish or should I put a ration to it?

Thanks all in advance.

Am I silly?

Assuming the lack of an overflow of responses to be a sign of a silly question I think I should add something:

I know that grass has an important quantity of Vitamine C (I don't know if this is true for all types) but it is lacking in other nutrients. My Guineas eat so much of it I am a bit worried they are neglecting other nutrients insured in their pellets.

Traditionally my culture eats salad after the other courses at the end of the meal. This doesn't work with my children so I've had to change and make them eat their salad first before being allowed the rest of their dinner or they won't eat it.

I just thought perhaps I should give my Guineas their pellets first and grass after they've finished them............perhaps I am silly but concerned.

Hiya - I don't know enough about the nutritional content of grass. I do know that some people don't use them but they feed lots of hay and a variation of vegetables containing vitamin C. Do your guineas get other veggies as well as the grass?

Also what pellets do you have there? Could it be that they don't like the pellets you feed much? Some can get so fussy which could become a concern in the future if you find you can't source something or they suddenly decide they have had enough of this grass.

Hi and thanks for your reply.

We give them all sorts of vegetables but they don't like most of them. They do love Chinese Cabbage and Apples. We have two types of pellets: one is made for rabbits and is very inexpensive and they eat it, the other is designed for Guinea pigs and is quite costly but they won't touch it.

We also give them fruit flavoured chips of all different colours. They eat these as fast as we can give them but the pet shop owner says they should only be given as an occasional treat.

We also tried Alfalfa Hay and regular Hay but they won't eat these either. Have I fussy Guineas or what?
