I've just grown some grass from seed as there's barely any left in my garden! Was just wondering how much at a time I should give as I guess it would be the same as new spring growth.
I put a blueberry size punnet in with the boys this morning and my goodness they went crazy for it, it was literally gone in seconds! they are now wheeking, sniffing around cage and sitting up on their hind legs trying to get my attention.
Did I grow guinea pig crack?:yikes:

If they've not had grass for a while then only small amounts at first to get them used to it. But if they're used to it then they can graze on grass for a few hours... If they're having a lot of grass just make sure not to over do it on the veggies

Thanks piggyowner and beans&toast, they have been getting daily grass but I can only get a large pinch each after spending ages searching between dandelions and some suspicious looking weeds on my lawn! I've read about spring grass being very rich and this stuff is so green and shiny compared to what they normally get, I was worried it might cause digestive problems especially at the rate they wolfed it down!

I'm glad I'm not the only one who has to go searching the garden for some strands of acceptable grass :P

Yeah, I now get grass envy when I see other people's plush lawns!

just reading this and I'm exactly the same, anywhere I go I'm looking at the grass thinking oooh they would think its Christmas
if they got let loose on this , I too had a lawn of moss not grass but I can proudly say that a little patch I have been trying my hardest
to treat has now started growing thick green lush grass, with lots of bald patches still so probably not big enough for them to graze
on and get excited about yet so I pick it for them but the sense of achievement I get in grabbing a handful instead of 4 blades each plus a few very bedraggled dandelion leaves is enormous ! :yahoo:

:clap:Grabbing handfuls of grass sounds wonderful jojessgaz, what did you do to treat your patch?

Well spock bit long winded but getting there... raked all I could moss wise and put down westlands lawnsafe. .. pet and child friendly and they have advised that after a cut and good watering which it's had the grass is good to eat as no chemicals are used. The down side to that was that its not strong enough to kill off the weeds so that's why I have only treated a bit as it was down on my hands and knees and pick out the weeds and last bits of moss... then what grass that was left this lawnsafe feeds to make greener and thicker therefore reducing risk of future weeds and moss. I'm still trying to grow seeds on the patches hence the piggies not grazing on it yet but the grass that's left is like a different lawn. Normally I'm hard pressed to get more than a handful of grass to feed them once a day but they were getting 2 to 3 handfuls a day from just a top prob 4ft by 6 of grass if that. I did over sprinkle the area... but with no chemicals. .. I'd say that was a good error on my part haha

I am always eyeing up grass and dandelions! Because I have two dogs Inhave to go out into the fields near us to pick grass. Jingle and Mistletoe hardly ever have veg.

Hope your guinea pigs continue to love their new drug!

Sorry for late reply, its been a bit full on the last few days, hope your pigs coped ok with the very hot weather. Thank goodness for this forum and frozen water bottles!
I've looked up the lawnsafe joessgaz and think I might get some once I've dug up all the weeds! Thanks for that :tu:.
Really interested in the high grass low veg and pellet way of feeding flowerfairy, been looking up and following threads on the subject and would love to hear more about it. I have a fire station near me and the surrounding grounds have luscious deep green grass, clover and plantain, I'm practically drooling over them but worried about fox pee .

my piggies have been eating huge amount of fresh grass for three months now, although it is difficult sometimes for me to find some piece of good lawn with such a hot weather. I always go to private lawns, hoping the gardener has not come with his damned mower.
Grass amazingly substitutes the vegs and is the most appropriate food for their gut. My piggies don't like every grass, though; they find differences! Clover is rich of oxalates, calcium and proteins and it is considered a legume; but when you pick up the grass, the amount of clover is little...
Plantain, too, is rich of calcium but has excellent properties similar to antibiotics. My piggies don't like it much... but some leaves would be very good. Dandelion is rich of calcium, too, but it is excellent for "washing" the bladder as it has diuretic properties. Then other grass has other properties, I am not able to recognise all the grass and now I am cutting mostly the one grown from the seeds.
I add some pics, maybe you can recognise the kind of the grass:
(a last thing: my piggies never had a bloated belly after such a huge meal)

 Uhhh, that grass looks soooo good! Been following some of the threads you've contributed to rome_italy and would like to find out as much as I can about it. I know you've said your vet has recommended this way of feeding but do you have any resources/ websites that you could share with me? Do you include dandelions/forage every day or just once/twice week?

Yes, I have many websites (serious ones) where it is possible to read about that. Some of them are not useful for you because they are written by italian vets (in italian), but I see that on Guinea Lynx it is written a lot and it is very scientific. As soon as I find again some interesting page, I can send you the links (I have deleted a lot of old stuff on my pc).
Dandelion: there is a little lawn nearby with a good and young dandelion, but I can pick up only about 10 leaves a day... I am trying not to destroy the plants.
The amount of the grass in the picture is sometimes served even twice a day... Normally that dose is for one day. When I cut the grass, I spray it with some water and I put it into the lower side of the fridge; I can serve it also after 12 hours (it is never too cold, but I sometimes put the bag into the microwave for 2-3 seconds).
Chat later! maybe in the evening I will be able to send you some good page!:D

@spock
I have found these pages, but I remember other good articles I cannot find now. Guinea Lynx is a great website and has a lot of external links.
Of course not all the vets (and owners) have the same point of view, it happens even with us humans and our diet... there are different opinions and the best rule is "listening" to our body and to piggies' body. My piggies eats the grass and don't eat pellets, but I also don't eat pizza, pasta and cereals; this is not THE rule, but only a style of eating because I have seen on my body a huge amount of improvement... and my piggies are growing up healthy as well. This can be different with you and your pigs...
Anyway, read carefully every chapter of Guinea Lynx and also these pages below.
The last page is unfortunately in italian, it is what a valued vet and researcher here suggests. I guess you can use an online translator (but she says the usual stuff... the only difference is that here vets don't trust vit C contained in pellets and sometimes suggest Cebion drops syringed into the mouth; but this is just a detail)

Wow, thank you so much! Our computer has just decided to play up so I'm on my phone now, will have a good read later and over the weekend. I too went low carb no refined sugar / paleo for a couple of years and found that I felt much better, unfortunately having a baby derailed it! Been trying to go back for a while now but don't have as much time to prepare food as I did. Want my boys to have the same near natural diet as possible. Thanks again !:luv:
