I have been feeding my piggies timothy hay from the store but I am thinking of starting to feed them the grass hay I buy for my horses since it is much more economical...I'm not sure what type of hay it is but it is grass not alfalfa...does it matter what type it is? should this be okay to feed to my piggies?

thanks.

I use a combination of timothy hay and meadow hay, when I run out completely and haven't got time to go down to the shop I have bought some from my stables and they have had that in the past. However, i've found that it is more dusty than the stuff you can buy in pet shops and they tend to prefer the greener types. I would say that it is okay, but I would wait for someone more experienced to come along!

I keep to using Timothy myself, as it's low calcium and high fiber

I've tried both shop bought & straight from the farm. My piggies prefer the bails straight from the farm which are only £4 & last about 3 months. I recently started helping out at Bunny Burrows rescue & they get special hay from near York. It's far better than what I've been buying & is £11 a bail. I've just got a 2 week sample & It seems that they're eating much more of this better quality stuff so I'll probably get a full bail in about 10 days. When I bought the shop bought stuff I found that it was generally dustier than what I bought from the farm. Maybe because it's packed in plastic bags & not allowed to breath like properly stored hay in a barn etc.

ok thanks, i will give it a try! I paid $5 something per bale for these bales that are about 75lbs...so much cheaper than store bought hay and it is nice hay, not dusty and pretty soft so I will see if they will eat it. Just wanted to make sure it would be an okay type of grass if its not timothy!

I find it amazing how much of that Timothy hay my skinny pig eats! Wow, I will buy the giant bag next time.

I suppose that when you're buying bales like this, it's down to what you think is good for your piggies. You obviously wouldn't give them something that is not good for them just because it's cheap. But just because it's cheap it doesn't mean it's bad either.

yeah I'm not so worried about the quality as far as dusty/moldy/etc, if it wasn't okay quality wise I wouldnt feed it to my horses either! I'm more worried as far as is it the right type of grass for pigs to eat
