Hi I would like to seek advice on how to transition from grass to hay. My guinea pigs had them since they were babies (abt 2 months) now turning 4 have been on mainly a grass diet specifically napier grass since that is what mostly is fed on my country also because hay is very expensive I am studying and cant afford it also take months to ship when I order bit I feed them unlimited grass fresh veg daily, feeds and a little bit of treats. sometimes I try to air dry it for days to make it like a hay but they dont like that very much they prefer fresh ones so I do harvest grass 2-3 times a week. 3 months ago I brought a bale of stargrass hay a local hay in my country and regret it cuz they only take nibbles and not really eat it properly. I bought 1 kg of timothy this time just to test it before going on bale. I noticed they started eating however when I give grass they still prefer that one, I tried stopping grass for few days and noticed small droppings. Now A bale of timothy I bought online arrived and it was much better from the first one I ordered much greener and they really like it. How do I introduce them to hay diet because ever since I had them I really want to give hay once I can afford thank you.

Hello and welcome to the forum
Guinea pigs live on hay as an unlimited part of their diet so you can feed it always - they like to eat it , play in it , sleep in it and they will poop in it !
As it is an unlimited food ordering a bale is the cheapest way. They can still have grass and I’m sure someone with more experience will be along to offer advice
What are your piggies called ? We’d love to see some pictures 🥰

All you need to do is put it in their cage and wait until they show interest. There is no way to introduce it as such because grass and hay are their main diet.
We generally don’t have access to unlimited amounts of fresh grass so we feed primarily hay but most piggies would still choose fresh grass when it’s on offer
