Yesterday was such an awful day. It started off as normal with my boys going outside in their run to enjoy the sunshine and grass until I heard a commotion. I went out to see the new neighbours dog circling my guinea pig run and charging at it. I ran over and tried to scoop up my boys with the dog (a very hyped up and fairly large chow) knocking me out the way. I grabbed Pickle up quickly only for the dog to jump and grab hold of his back end so it became a tugging game for the dog! Fortunately my other pig was hidden well away in fear. After what seemed an eternity I rescued Pickle and got both boys inside. I rang the vet and rushed him in. After a thorough check and some pain killer he was just severely bruised and in shock. Despite me not knowing whether to be angry or upset I managed to smile when the vet pointed out his 'extra coverage' probably helped save him from serious and potentially fatal internal injuries! This morning he seems back to his normal self after having a very quiet night, thank goodness! I've been trying to slim them down but am so glad I was doing a bad job at it!

Oh my goodness! What a shock for you both!
So glad Pickle wasn't seriously hurt!

Is there anyway you can get your neighbour to keep their dog in when your piggies go out?

How frightening, thank goodness no serious harm came to them. Xx

What a dreadful shock to you and the piggies, but glad they are both ok. I hope you have had a conversation with your neighbour regarding what happened.

What a horrible shock. Hope both boys are now ok and your neighbour will assure you that the dog will not be coming into your garden again so you can put them back outside.

That would be my worst nighmare. What a horrible shock for you . I am so relieved that your guinea pig survived.

by law they have to contain their dog. Do you share a garden or did he come from theirs?

I'm sorry, neighbours dog or not, if a dog attacked my pigs in my garden, I'd take a baseball bat to it, I'm sorry if it upsets any of you, I'm very protective of my pigs as they had a horrible start in life and its my job to keep them safe. ;)

Oh my goodness! How awful :(

I suppose you can't blame the dog for doing what comes instinctively, but it is certainly your neighbour's duty to ensure that their dog is well contained! I hope they have made changes so that this cannot possibly happen again.

i am a dog lover and have two dogs but i feel exactly the same and wouldnt blame anyone . I have a dog that takes off sometimes and when you block a hole he makes a new one and i wouldnt have a problem with a farmer shooting him if he was bothering livestock or anyone defending their animals

I am very glad that you had such a narrow escape!

I lost my first own piggy (and his wife, who was my sister's) as a teenager when a neighbour's dog managed to dig under a fence and break into what we thought was a safe run. We only found him the next day where he had been flung into shrubs down a steep slope, but a broken neck indicated that he couldn't have suffered long. My sister sadly met the dog with her limp piggy in his mouth on the street and suffered a bad shock.

Maybe your neighbours would like to pay for your vet fees.
Hope your piggies are both ok now after their horrible ordeal, I bet they won't be so keen to go out now.

Thank you everyone for your kind comments. Pickle seems back to normal and is eating lots :) Unfortunately my neighbours have been rather useless and nothing has been resolved. Most importantly, Pickle is ok but the dog and fence issue goes on.....

Oh i'm so sorry, that's an awful thing to happen :(

Oh how horrible for you, I'm so glad your piggies are okay. We have the same problem with next door neighbours dogs, they come in our garden and the neighbours find it funny when we tell them we've had to pick up their mess etc

I hope that you can resolve the dog/fence issues! And making sure that your piggies are safe at all times!

Thank god he is ok! I love dogs, but as his owner your neighbors need to assume all responsibility for his actions, because a dog can't be blamed for being a dog. Not only should they apologize until they are blue in the face, but they should reimburse you for the vet bills, and do whatever is necessary to insure this can't happen again.

How awful....i am a dog owner and would expect to pay the vet bill if my dog did this. Not the dog's fault though!

How awful for you. I'm so glad it turned out ok for you and your piggies but what a worry for you.

If the dog had caught your hand in the process, it could have got very serious. I watched a program about dangerous dogs recently, where a neighbours dog kept getting in a neighbouring garden and attacking their little dog. The RSPCA stepped in, demanding the owners of the offending dog fixed their fence as a garden has to be able to contain the dog. In the end, it resulted in the person giving up the dog that had attacked, but the fence remained damaged.
