It depends on how active it is. With males it tends to get dirtier then females. I for example owned a sow first and never even realised she had a grease gland! But my boar definitely makes me aware of it,his is quite active. If it's not too dirty I would wash it once a month or every two weeks because too much will only irritate the gland and make it dry. If it's quite yucky then you can clean it more regularly I for example do Mo's either every night or every two days depending on how it is. You can use fairy liquid- though a small amount because it will dry skin if used regularly and in big puddles. There's coconut oil which works magic though is expensive- I'm hopefully going to purchase some soon! there are other ways of cleaning it and I believe there is a thread on here telling you all you need to know about cleaning your piggy. And the guinea pig lynx website also has a page of information on it.
Some guinea pigs need it never cleaned, others have very active grease glands. Boars generally have a more active grease gland, but sows can suffer from them, too.
I only ever do it as needed (i.e. when it looks greasy.) For some pigs that amounts to never, for others (Sundae had a really active grease gland) it was pretty frequently!
