grease gland

does anybody know what the purpose of the grease gland is? i mean i know it can get "clogged" and cause problems (i try to keep my boys clean) but is there some kinda biological reason for it? i was thinking it was something to do with pheremones to attract the ladies (just a guess). anybody know?
