I'm yet to adopt my first two piggies but I've been trying to read up on their health and wellbeing.

I've noticed lots of information about grease glands in boars. Do these still need to be cleaned in neutered boars or are they mainly an issue in entire males?

I've just got some lovelies from Gorgeous Guineas in the post today so I'm all primed and ready to go - just waiting for the piggies.

Welcome.
It all depends on the individual boar. Neutering has no effect on the grease gland. Some boars need the excess "grease" cleaned off the hair on a regular basis, others never have any problem.
Washing up liquid or Swarfega are both ideal for degreasing purposes, there is no need for anything "special".
Good luck with the new arrivals.

Basil does need the occasional bit of attention on this point. He finds that Swarfega gets the fur nice and fresh without damaging it (or, more importantly, stinging his important little places!).

Basil has done the manly thing and had the op so that he can live with his grilfriend, Topaz without the worry of the patter of tiny feet. In general, he finds that the grease gland gets more active when he's indoors or it's very warm. The occasional short back and sides helps keep him fresh.

Thank you everyone. I'm all set to do a shampoo and set every 4-6 weeks with my beautiful shampoos from Gorgeous Guineas and I've already got plenty of Fairy Liquid in stock. Guess it's a case of some need doing more often than others. Let's hope Gubbins isn't a smelly boy!

Gubbins is he a Rescue piggie? Is he on here, if so were's the picture? You only have to bath piggies every 3 - 6 months (but it does depend on the piggie ie long haired etc... lies in its wee :))!

I've had 7 board in my time, none of them neutered. Three of them had grease glands that needed a bit of attention while the other 4, no problems at all. I have no idea why.

I have two neutered and two intact boys. None have issues with their grease glands, no buildups at all; the only time I have needed to clean the grease gland is when I first adopted Frankie, over a year ago!
