Lady Kelly
Senior Guinea Pig
These piggies know how to worry us. Daisy is not harsh to her cagemates but she likes to play pretend that shes top pig so she runs around and grabs everything in her mouth before its even in the cage. Tonight I put the veggies out and watched as she rushed to finish what she was eating so that she could run over and grab the broccoli that Willow dropped.
When doing this she did a little cough which isn't uncommon for a greedy pig like her. But then she did about 6 coughs in a row and kept going with perhaps 10 seconds or so between each cough (hard to say when you're starting to freak out as I didn't time it). I quickly got her out much to her annoyance as she was still trouncing around eating her veg.
I got one of the medication syringes and gently popped it into her mouth from either side scooping forward to make sure nothing was stuck though I didn't dare go too far back as I didn't want to do any damage. I then syringed a bit of water in hopes of "flushing" whatever was lodged or just irritating her reflexes. She didn't "cough" for about 3 and a half mins after that but she has done the occasion cough since.
I don't want to panic unnecessarily and she is running around and eating. Is it likely that something just irritated her rather than having something stuck? She ate a piece of green pepper and a slice of cucumber while I had her out with no problem so there definitely isn't a blockage and I had a good listen to her and there were no breathing problems. Obviously I'll see how she is in the morning and if there's any concern then I will get her to my vet.
