Minja passed on today. We expect what was in her stomach ruptured. Don't feel ready to talk or post on rainbow bridge section just yet

Ginny is eating and drinking, but hesitantly. Expectantly not as loud or motivated as usual. Worried as he doesn't seem to be passing as much as usual. I want to put in a blanket with Minja's scent on it but not sure as it's possible it's transmittable.
No clue what to do about companionship. He's getting on and I'm afraid I'll leave a piggy behind if I get to one and he moves on, then going into a never ending cycle. I'm considering foster, but pretty sure they can't mix? It would be cruel to split them if an adopter comes around.

Just hope he doesn't go to grieve, he's a fairly strong only fellow health wise but emotional wise I'm not sure

Sorry for your loss. It's hard losing an older pig and leaving another oldie behind.

If you are certain that Minja didn't have anything contagious, then by all means keep the towel in. It does help.

I would recommend getting another pig, even if it's a long-term foster because they really do need companionship, especially if they go into acute-pining. I almost lost Oreo because I didn't realise he was acute pining, but now I thankfully have him bonded with another boar. Try contacting a good local rescue and asking about bonding. They may consider long term fostering if you explain the situation.

Good luck with Ginny.

HUGS! I am very sorry for your loss. Have you considered contacting a good rescue and asking whether they would allow you to adopt a companion for the duration of his life that reverts back to the rescue?

Have they been together before Minja's death? In that case, you can put in a rag with the smell as infection would have already happened; otherwise I would leave be as a precaution.

I've just had to have my old man Maelog pts yesterday morning after he suffered a blockage, so I am feeling for you!

Thanks both of you. I put the blanket in for a minute. He didn't come out to inspect. I lifted the cardboard house to see he was leaning/cuddling against a toy I gave to him earlier (which he seems to have taken to thankfully) after looking up grief. Curiously, he hesitated before sniffing it and returning to the box.
Must admit my paranoia took it out after he left it alone

About long term foster and/or adopting, I will definitely see about it. I'm just worried that should Ginny pass on first, I will be too attached to the foster/adopt. I would feel horrible either way giving the foster/adopt back to the rescue as it feels cold of me to do, though I'm unsure.
To be honest I'm just incredibly scared I'll wake up in a few hours for him to be gone

Wiebke, rest in peace to your old boy

I'm so sorry for you loss :soz:

I agree, Fostering is a good idea .

Thanks piggyowner

Does anyone know any rescues/fosters? I don't see any of the locator near me and can't find any online.

Have you tried on the Guinea Lynx forum? That's where I found my rescue. Otherwise, try Gumtree or Preloved as some good rescues advertise on there.

Thanks, though I couldn't see anything :( Not sure why, but around here rescues save for RSPCA seem to be rare. Waiting on a reply from a boarding place I use for Ginny (and the girls before) to see if they have any advice. By the way, how does long-term foster actually work?

Looked through many of the RSPCA branches near me and don't seem to have any guinea pigs save for boys, but to be honest looking for girls

Having a hard time looking for rescues, the only one in Norfolk I could find doesn't seem to be actively running. How does long term fostering work?

Just spent another two hours looking online, looked on fb, google and others with no luck. It appears Sprowston Guinea Pig Rescue which was near us closed?

Rescues are few and far between in Norfolk I am afraid, I dont know of any. Maybe ask the local vets if they know of any?
I will keep my eye out, it may be worth making a post on one of the facebook piggy groups if you are on there

Thanks and I'll make sure to :) I found a page that gathers rescues and posts them on a map. While they haven't got any near me on there, I'll ask them if they might know any just to see
