Sunday night I lost my beautiful girl Bella. She fell over and then struggled to get up her back end just seemed to give out and she was exhausted. I left her with her husband Butler and friend Esme for a few hours and she was eating but still falling and tired. After a while I wrapped her in fleace and snuggled her to me as she was also freezing. She dozed for a good few hours and tried to talk to me but she was short of breath and I knew she was going to die. I spent all night talking to her and reassuring her that she'd be ok and just to let go. She fought it for hours. When she finally passed I put her in the cage so the others would understand she was gone and not comming back.

Butler took it the worst and was nudging her a lot. He just didn't seem to understand. Esme was her typical self and barely looked at Bella she doesn't seem to care rolleyes

I'm worried how they will deal with her loss. Will they greive? They are certainly very quiet and maybe a little scared of me like It was my fault or I did something to Bella. Will they understand?

so sorry to hear you lost little Bella :( they will know in NO way it was your fault that Bella has gone to the bridge

I know from my own experience that piggies do grieve and can get lonely ours were in a pair so it was a lonely time for Maurice when Julien passed away 8... they were down in Cambridge when it happenedas Julien was getting specialist dental treatment for a large abscess Mo was nudging Jules as if to say "get up" but it wasn't to be - Mo was very "down" looking when we brought him home and although it was too soon for me to get him a buddy I knew I had to for his sake

I am not sure if it will be different as yours were in a group of three but whee are sending big hugs to you all especially Butler at this sad time of losing his wife

When my Rosie died I let Poppy and Daisy see her body so they knew she wasn't coming back. It did scare them but they didn't look for Rosie like Rosie had looked for her first friend Molly. They didn't feel safe without her as she was boss piggy. I let them sort themselves out and realise the world wasn't so bad before I started looking for their new friend.

They have just met their new friend Annabelle yesterday and she fitted in just nicely. Poppy has decided she does want to be boss and is making sure Annabelle knows this and reminding Daisy.

I know they have each other now so its not a lonely as if it was only two of them. The thing is Bella was the glue. She was in the middle and the one they both favoured. She was the under sow but her and Esme were together for three years. Butler joined them a few months ago and he loved he soo much. They we're extremely snuggly especially the last month or so (maybe he knew and was looking after her) Esme is pretty snappy with him. He is the boss but only because she lets him. They both used to spend time with Bella rather than together and i'm worried how they'll be with just each other.

I am so sorry about Bella!

Yes, piggies in gorups do grieve the same as if they were left single - you will notice that they are subdued for a while. But having the company of another piggy will usually help to keep them going.

I have noticed that piggies react completely differently to a dead piggy - some won't come near or just give it a quick glance, while others will try to bring it back to life. But that has nothing to do with their feelings. We humans react to the sight of a dead body as differently, too!
