I know there are a couple of people on the forum who grow their own grass in boxes. I’m just wondering how I’d grow my own?
We have a piggy who is having daily grass for digestive support for his bowel disease. The grass in our garden is poor but we manage from time to time to give our piggies grass. At the moment we’ve been picking grass from a field since we are giving grass twice daily.
We are planning on having about 7 boxes of grass to keep in a mini green house outside.
How do we even begin? Is it as simple as buying boxes, soil and grass seeds?
How long until we see grass? And when we trim the grass for the piggy, how long does it take for the grass to grow back?
How often do we need to water it?
Do we need to bring them in during winter? Will it still grow in winter, and if so do we need to change how we take care of it?
Thanks in advance! :)

We grow grass on the windowsills in summer, just buy some "pet and child safe" grass seed that hasnt been treated with chemicals, plant in windowboxes in ordinary compost (scatter a handful of seeds then cover with 2-3cm soil) water well every 2 or 3 days or daily in hot weather and... 2-3 weeks later there will be grass :)
Regrows in 2-3 weeks too after harvesting, unless you give them the whole thing to play in and somepig (Blodwen usually) digs up and eats the roots too!

Thank you for the info! It’s very helpful :)
We’re struggling actually to find any seeds that state that they’re pet and child safe. Do you have any recommendations?

Wilco’s used to sell a box of just plain grass seed with no chemicals and nutrients added, but not been in there for well over a year now

We bought a bag of grass seed from Amazon from thegrasspeople.com which says it is pet and child safe, and the piggies certainly enjoyed it, it grew really well all summer :)

My OH just puts compost in seed trays, sprinkles on grass seed (from Wilko) and covers with a little more compost. We currently have them in a cold frame and they are starting to grow. The piggies love it and it will keep growing for quite some time as long as it gets watered. We fertilise it with piggy poop. All very natural.😃

I've grown grass for our piggies for a few years as we have a very poor garden, I got cat grass seeds from wilkos and it grows all year round on the windowsill but I have recently been buying some cat grass tubs on Amazon it comes with seeds and soil and grows very well. It's a bit dearer but it's everything you need.

Hi everyone! I'm looking to grow grass because I have a piggy who is newly dental and the earliest she can have her teeth and abscess sorted is in 3 weeks :( I've heard grass can be good because it is easier to eat than hay but still helps to grind the teeth down. We aren't able to grow from scratch in our flat because we wouldn't be able to buy compost and soil.

Can anyone help me if these would be suitable for piggies? It says it's wheatgrass..https://www.amazon.co.uk/Cat-Grass-Pack-Grow-your/dp/B01CMFPXAW/ref=sr_1_10?crid=11W0KGWZXJZQB&dchild=1&keywords=grow+grass+for+rabbits&qid=1616770024&sprefix=grow+grass%2Caps%2C151&sr=8-10

Alternatively I've just heard of readigrass but that's dried so I'm not sure if it would be similar to hay in easiness to eat
