I move my guinea pigs outdoors in the summer to take advantage of all the free grass, they love it and have a huge run so much more space. So I was thinking I could use the plastic bases of their three storey cage as planters and grow some salad and herbs and stuff, since I was planning on growing veg in pots anyway. :) Then in autumn I'll clean them out and give them back to the piggies in their winter home in my kitchen.

Three huge pots for free, 120cm x 60cm can grow a lot of salad leaves. :)

Sounds great, do you live in AUS? Because by the sounds of the seasons, you live in the southern hemisphere - that's rare on this forum (kidding)!

only problem is the soil and water my cause discolouration and also the plastic may grow weak being out in the sun, one of mine cracked a few years ago as left it outside in the summer. You can buy growing bags that are made from plastic sacking.

Nope, living in Ireland but just thinking ahead to spring and summer. :)

I think it'll be ok in the sun cos I left the cages outside for like a year before, haha, when I wasn't using them, just left them in the yard.

And it might get discoloured but I don't mind too much, it's very dark blue anyway. I hope it wouldn't weaken it, I'll have to see, I really don't wanna damage the cage.

Yes I wanna try grow bags too. I'm so excited about growing veg. :)
