Hello users. I was wondering if i could get a bit of advice. I've got two piggies. A Rex named Squeek & a long haired called Cuddles. Cuddles is an older guinea pig & I have noticed lately that she has become very crabby. Sometimes she will threaten squeek & my mum has also caught them fighting. I'm going to split them up but they will still get floor time together. What is really worrying me though is she WILL NOT let ANYONE cut her nails & they have now become very long. She bit me yesterday & drew blood. She has a cyst on her ovaries & a water infection which is kept in check by antibiotics & steroids. I was wondering if anyone has any advice to help my Piggys mood swings? Thankyou.

I would not split them up as they have not drawn blood. Although it may not seem that way, I would say they are bonded and would miss each other if apart.

With cutting her nails it is best if somebody can hold her for you while you do it. I know she hates it but it needs to be done. Maybe just do one nail a day so it is not too stressful for her.

What is being done for her cysts?

She has had antibiotics for it. The vet basically said the only option was to "put her to sleep or try this" which wasn't very nice. She was a breeding guinea pig before I got her & she was basically just used for that purpose. She had not really had any human handling. I will try the one nail a day & see how it goes :) thankyou :)

Please DO NOT split your guinea pigs. Blood hasn't been drawn so there is no need.

As for her nails, a vet or vet nurse will cut them for you if you can't do them yourself.

If she is feeling unwell by her UTI and has cysts, it is no wonder she is being crabby.

Please have her seen by another vet as guinea pigs biting humans and drawing blood is very uncommon. She may be poorly :( xx

Cysts and UTI's are not reasons to have an animal PTS :( xx

I know I thought that too but the vets in the place I go to are quite rude. She has an appointment for next week so hopefully something will be sorted out. She seems fine today, sniffing my feet & running away as we speak :)
I think she must have mis took my thumb for a cucumber or something!

I really think you need to seek a new practice. How dare the vet be rude to you? When my piggy was thought to have ovarian cysts she was spayed. Is that not an option for your little one?

I came out the vet in floods of tears. It was awful. I've registered with a new vet that specialises in small animals. I asked about her being spayed at the old vet but he just said she's too old (she's nearly 8).

That should say 8 haha but cuddles does like chewing sun glasses haha!

Oh at eight it would be a bit traumatic for her to be spayed. Poor thing. At least see what this new vet says.

I agree that a spay at 8 year old may be traumatic for your little one but hopefully they will be able to do something. Ovarian cysts are not a reason for an animal to be PTS.

If she is still quite lively, active etc and they would suggest PTS,If it was my pig I would attempt a spay. If they lose her under the anaesthetic then it will be the same for her as a PTS, and if she recovers then she will have a new lease on life, you have nothing to lose by trying, if you see what I mean? :)

There is a great vet in Falkirk (Denny) called Apex vets, which I don't use, but some forum members do. The vet to go to there is called Glen.

I use the Dick Vet in Edinburgh, which may also be a bit far for you to go, but is excellent.

Thankyou, it is a bit far to travel but I would do it for my pigs.

Aw poor girl :(
What a horrible vet...I have no experience of ovarian cysts but our 'sport billies' on here have a little girl who has them and think she has hormone injections to shrink them - do not go back to this vet pow-pow
I have a girl whom I thought may have this problem as she was constantly in season and mounting the others in the herd but thankfully, has subsided... my decision would have been the injection route rather than spay if possible from an experienced vet.
Never be afraid to ask questions, I always go armed from researching and come away happy from our vet :(|)
Let us know how things go and send your little one hugs x>>
