Well.
Here I am again, except it's not Birt, it's my little girl Gertrude.

I'm really upset. I just had a look at her teeth and her bottom teeth looks like they've split and her top ones look like one is missing. This was the start of what happened with Agnes. I seemed to have jinxed it as I said Gertrude has never had issues with any thing. And now I've seen her teeth. Nothing has changed with Her eating habits but I have noticed she has been wanting more and more hay.

Is it me? Am I just an absolute rubbish owner cus two of my pigs have had dental issues now. I do my best I don't know what to do.

just so upset I could ball my eyes out.

I am ever so sorry! it is upsetting when you come up against the same issue again with another piggy.

lease weigh her daily at the same time so you can monitor her food intake. Are Agnes and Gertrude related? Could it be something too hard they bite on? How piggy savvy is the vet you are seeing?

I am tagging our dental specialist for you: @furryfriends Excellent Adventure Sanctuary

Agnes and Gertrude were bought together from Pets at Home back in 2012. Agnes had fungal when I got her and from when she turned 2, she seemed to just go down hill - she died in October gone.

I am not sure, I've noticed Gertrude biting her cage bars? I assumed she was wanting more hay to grind her teeth down. Every day I leave for work and top her hay bowl up so she has loads.

She has a like those sticks you know the ones which are wrapped either side with hay? But she hasnt been bothered with them for some time. I noticed before I gave her a bit of carrot and she just didnt bothered with it. Not like her at all.

The vets I have seen are very pig savvy - there's a vet there who is very experienced in guinea pigs - I got the vet from off here, Rose Cottage?

Thank you for replying Wiebke, I dont know what I'm doing wrong.

Sorry you are having problems with your Gertrude( lovely name, by the way!). Sometimes these things just happen, so don't be hard on yourself. I am not a dental expert, but Wiebke has tagged in somebody who will be able to give you the benefit of her expertise. Hang on in there and give Gertrude a hug from me x

Thanks AuntyC, that's a real nice message. Just want to be able to say that I've done everything I could for my guinea pigs but sometimes feel I have let them down.

I will give her a big hug from you - thank you again x

Please be aware that dental treatment of guinea pigs is not something that even otherwise experienced piggy vets are proficient in. I hope that furryfriends can help you; she is running a sanctuary/hospital for dental guinea pigs in conjunction with the most experienced piggy dental vet in the country.

Hey everyone!

Got some great news! :-) I took my Gertrude to the vets, they saw her and her teeth had forked to the side and become overgrown, when the vet had a look, she could see they were so wobbly and said they need to be removed. She went under the next day, I was so sad, I was crying in the car - what a loser.

But she came around, shes back home, it's been 4 days since she went, she's eating loads and drinking and her poos are back to normal. She goes back this Thursday to see how she is, I've been giving her antibiotics too. I'm so happy she's better. I was so worried she was going to pass away like Agnes.

Hope all is well with everyone and their piggies! :)

My girl is going on Friday to have her back teeth filed as they are pressing into her tongue :( It's great to hear that Gertrude responded well to her treatment - I'm really nervous about the days after the op. Was Gertrude able to eat straight away? Poor Pappis is finding eating very difficult at the moment but I know how important it is that she keeps going.
