Guilt Over Guinea Pig Euthanasia

Today I took my guinea pig to the vets as he had been making sounds that were unusual for him and were more like cries of pain.

He had an xray which revealed a very large bladder stone. I was talked through the risks and advised that the size of the stone may have damaged other organs. I decided it was more appropriate to put him to sleep as did not want him to suffer.

I really did not want to lose him and ever since the decision have regretted it greatly. I really feel awful for not at least giving him a chance to have it removed.

I really dont know what I wanted to get out of this post however just felt like sharing.

You ended he's pain and suffering. That is the greatest act of love there is. X
 
Hi and welcome to the forum. I am sorry it brings you here in such sad circumstances. Making the decision to help end the suffering of a little one is one of the hardest decisions to have to make. What you did was an act of love. I had to make this choice when one of my guinea pigs had a tumour and it hurts so badly. Your feelings of guilt are perfectly normal. You put your little one first and that was so caring and brave. I am so sorry for your loss.

What you are experiencing are perfectly normal feelings. You did the kindest thing under the circumstances, but it was sprung on you and you are now working through it. Feelings of guilt or failure are pretty par for the course when you have lost a piggy very suddenly or had to pts; they are usually the start of the grieving process. Most of us who have had piggies for a number of years have been through it and understand what you are going through.

I have lost a piggy not during the bladder operation itself but to the damage in the bladder walls after the operation several years ago. Large stones can be excruciatingly painful. The op would have been pretty touch and go anyway, especially if your vet was not at all happy with his findings and your piggy was not in a good shape due to the stone.

Sorry for your loss. These little critters leave paw prints on our hearts, remember they are, 'a little flower, lent, not given, to bud on earth and bloom in heaven.'
 
I'm so sorry. Please don't feel guilty, you really did the kindest thing possible.
 
I agree with all the above posts. It's a very brave decision to make and is the kindest thing. I am so sorry for your loss.
 
Oh darling, you poor thing. I understand, we all do, it's an incredibly hard decision to make, but its really about the suffering and minimising those. At the end of the day, you've done and made a decision that removes the suffering. Even after a couple of years, I still mourn my first piggy Blossom whom was a real love of mine, you never forget.

The advantage here is we all understand how much we get attached to our beloved friends.

I am lucky that I have 2 other pigs. I found myself becoming a guinea pig fanatic very quickly following owning my first.

Also thanks to wiebk for the link as one of my pigs was very attached to him.

Sending you hugs.I have had to get numerous animals pts and it is never easy.You did wat was right for your pet.It is the last act of love we can do for them
