Guinea Big - Ovarian Cyst Advice

hello, I’m a first time poster, long time lurker. I rehomed 2 female guinea pigs on Thursday, Olivia and Kate. When I got the girls home, I noticed how absolutely huge they were. I thought they were pregnant in all honesty. I took them to the vets earlier tonight, the vet gave them both an ultrasound. It turns out Olivia, is massively over weight. Kate has a massive ovarian cyst, she needs a spay on Thursday. I’ve never had a guinea pig spayed before, I was wondering if anybody had any advice on care? The food they are been currently fed is ‘sweet meadow mix rabbit food’ I’ve got burgess guinea pig nuggets and the asda Guinea pig nuggets. How much should I feed each girl? Any advice greatly appreciated. Thank you xx

First off your girls are beautiful, sorry to hear about the cyst. Spaying is a big operation so I am linking you to our after care guide for operations Tips For Post-operative Care please remember to make sure the vet prescribes pain releif to give at home after the operation this is vital

My five year old Iola was spayed in May because of two massive non-hormonal ovarian cysts. She's still going fine and has celebrated her 6th birthday at the end of the year.
 
Is your vet experienced with spaying? Piggy vets near to you @VickiA Who do potteries rescue use?

Hi, I had my late bumble spayed as an emergency (she went in for an ultrasound and the vet rang me right away to get permission to operate). She was 5 and a half years old and had a massive cyst and one the other side not quite so large. My vet at the time did keyhole surgery too where they go in through the flank rather than from the piggies tummy. It looks horrendous (I'm squeamish and struggled with seeing her sides stapled at first). However it's easier to keep clean and Bumble recovered really quickly.

PS: I kept Iola and her companion Hafren together the whole time including the trip to the vet although you may have to enquire how they stand on that aspect. The more your piggies can stay together the better!
 
Hi, I had 2 of my older sows spayed. Beans was first, and done the "old" way. With a small incision underneath on her tummy. She handled it very well and was bouncing about after a few hours.

Toast was done later on with 2 very small incisions on the flank instead of her tummy. She also healed amazing despite an incident with the gas during the op.

I kept them separated for a week after the ops (but they could still see each other) just so I could see if they were eating and pooing okay. I also used white/cream fleece and towels as bedding so I could see if there was any blood.

Although it's a big op, the risks are reduced when done with an experienced vet. I hope all goes okay with your girls :)
 
Thank you all for your kind wishes, you’ve all been so lovely to me, it’s very much appreciated :) I can take Olivia with her, hopefully should help. I’ve only ever had cats and rabbits spayed, I’m so nervous about it x

It is normal to be worried, of course but we are here to help support you if we can. Your vet is very very good the potteries rescue use them as @VickiA said so they have vast experience with piggies and in your care also Kate is in the best of hands.
