I came home from school today and picked paddington up from his cage . He was making noises like he was choking but other than that he was fine . He was walking around and fell off the chair he was on and rolled a little bit and I picked him up and he seemed ok other than he was still making the weird noise , but then he was trying to snuggle into my arms and bury his nose and was making the sounds still . He then started to go limp and I took him into the kitchen to check his mouth to see if he was choking and he just rolled over on the floor and has now died . I'm scared incase the fall was the reason but he was making the noises before and acting a bit off before the fall . So I'm wondering whether he was dying before and the fall wasn't what killed him .

Hi and welcome!

Please take a deep breath! You haven't killed Paddington!

He may have choked on something or he could have died from acute heart failure, but it has obviously happened while you were away. By the sound of it, Paddington was unfortunately already in the last stages of whatever has caused his death when you picked him up. There was no time for you to rush him to the vets as a life-and-death emergency in the faint hope that his life could be saved. :(

Unfortunately only a fairly expensive post mortem examination at a vet's will be able to discover the exact cause of his death.

Sadly, a sudden unexpected death can happen at any time of the life. It leaves you very shaken as it comes as such a shock.

Thank you , it's only just happened and my other guinea pig Norman died last year so now I have none :( I feel really guilty so I hope the fall isn't what killed him , he did seem fine afterwards anyway. But thank you for your reply.

It is totally normal to have feelings of guilt or failure at the onset of the grieving process. We all have them to some extent or other whenever one ours passes away. They are generally stronger when you cannot brace for a death, when a piggy dies after a drawn out battle or when you have to put a guinea pig to sleep. You are sadly dealing with the first group of these. :(

Paddington fell over because he was dying and no longer able to stand. it is very upsetting to watch, especially if you have never experienced a death before. Dying is unfortunately usually a lot more physical than our sanitized picture of gently drifting away in one's sleep. Watching the body closing down can come as a massive shock.

All it tells me that you are a caring owner and that both Paddington and Norman have been much loved!

HUGS

You didn't cause his death Ruby, I think at that stage you couldn't have done anything.

Please don’t feel guilty- death happens and it is distressing to watch.
Many of us on the forum have had similar experiences so we understand how you feel.
Now it is important for you to take time to grieve- be kind to yourself.

Sending you massive hugs. So sorry to hear of your loss. Please don't feel bad, I understand how you feel. I had a piggy die suddenly of heart failure, it's a shock.
Take time to grieve and remember the happy times.
Sleep tight little piggy. xx
