Guinea Eye Removal :(

Thank you for the tag.

My Eliza had her eye removed last summer after a nasty eye injury. Unfortunately for her, the eye socket became infected and we had problems afterwards due to this BUT it was just one of those things that happened and we dealt with it.

In respect of the actual removal and recovery itself, Eliza did very well. She was nearly 6 years old when she had her surgery but due to how healthy she was, my vet had no concerns that she wasn't fit enough.

On the evening that Eliza came home, she was quiet and sleepy but she ate and drank straight away and soon settled.

I was advised to bed Eliza on fleece so not to irritate her socket. I just kept giving her little piles of hay to eat.

It didn't take Eliza long to adapt at all but I made sure not to move furniture in the cage around too much. Eliza acted like a normal guinea pig and without looking at her, you wouldn't think there was anything wrong.

Her friends soon adapted too although there were some dominance issues in the beginning and Eliza was pushed around but her friends never hurt her.

A lot of people assume that the surgery is gruesome but honestly, Eliza looked nowhere near as bad as I imagined. At first, she just looked like she had her eye closed.

Eliza sadly died in March this year due to old age but I have no regrets and thanks to the eye removal, she had a few months of life left that she wouldn't have had otherwise.

I am keeping everything crossed for your little one today xx

Omg, that's such a shock!

I'm hoping the operation went well for the little piggie today! Wishing a speedy recovery for the little one!

Sorry for the late update. She's absolutely great, the vet said she was a little shaky at first but then was soon talking to them and eating all their food haha!
I'm going to keep her in the indoor cage for a bit until she's fully better and then slowly introduce her to the others! She has some pain relief and has got a check up on Friday which I think will be fine.
I'm so so happy she's feeling okay! xx

Great to hear it all went well! Sounds like she's going to bounce right back :)
ps. the piggy in your avatar looks really like my Wyatt, I've not seen many others with the grey/white colouring - its so pretty!

plenty of veggies, cuddles and kisses! I really hope she is ok, it must be awful for you both. I'm sure you will give her a lovely life after the operation and she will be as happy as she was before! Let us know how it goes. Love to you both <3

It's such a beautiful colour! She's passed it on to 3 of her pups too!

She's going to be getting plenty of those!
She's a naughty one so I'm sure she'll be back up to no good in no time.!

Hello everyone! I have a slight problem with Finn :( at first she was eating perfectly well, now she's stopped eating almost completely, she's nibbled some grass that I put in her cage and the only thing she'll eat properly is dandelion leaves :( any ideas on how I can make her eat some more or should I start hand feeding?

Whilst I was typing this she took a bite of some greens for the first time since she stopped eating haha weird! But I still need help on the questions above just in case :(
Thanks for all your help. X

Is she still having her pain relief medicine?

How's the wound looking? Any signs of infection?

I'd offer her lots of different varieties, and also some Critical Care. Sometimes that perks them up and they'll eat that instead. Otherwise you'll need to handfeed her

Yes she's still having pain relief. She's perfect fine in herself, she's just not eating very well. I've put her a mix of grass, hay,Woodlands herbal mix, her favourite leafy greens, cucumber and a bit of apple in just now as well as a small bowl of muesli and pellets. Hopefully when I go check she'll have eaten at least some of it!

As already mentioned, be prepared to hand feed if necessary.

She may be feeling a little under the weather and / or still sleepy from the anaesthetic. It can take anything between 24 and 48 hours for the effects of the anaesthetic to wear off.

Is she still urinating and pooping normally? If her poos become smaller, drier or abnormal looking, this can be a sign that she isn't eating and drinking enough so please keep an eye on her urine and faeces output.

For signs of infection you are looking for redness around the wound, an unpleasant smell, abnormal discharge, the wound to feel warm to the touch. All are signs that there could be an infection although I am guessing she is just suffering the after effects of surgery.

Good luck x

Please weigh her daily and if necessary top her up with hand feed. We have got a guide in the caring for an ill piggy section. Have bit of rough fibre like cardboard in the cage for her to munch on; piggies seem to crave it after a GA in order to stabilise their guts again.
Check with your vets re. painkiller and gut stimulant, and keep an eye out for a possible infection in the next days.

I sat her on me knee and stroked her and she started munching all the grass I put with her, clearly wanted more attention! Still going to keep my eye on her though :)
