I am trying to design a poster for what fresh foods guineas can eat.

I want to make it an idiots guide, so hopefully we can use it at our rabbit/guinea awareness days.

I don't really want a long list of foods as people won't read it and I don't really want to put things on that should only be given in moderation as again people won't read it properly.

So what foods do you think I should include? and also what quantity? I give mine 1 cup full each every day do you think people will understand that or do you think I need a measurement.

I won't be alot of help probably but I'd say celery, cucumber, baby carrot, red etc pepper, romaine lettuce, green beans, mange tout.

I love this idea you have I think it will be very helpful and get peoples interest.

and you know you are going to get loads of requests from this forum for a copy! LOL!

Brilliant idea though - it will be a great help for people

I think a cupful is a good measurement. If you tell people 100g (or whatever) people may think it's too much trouble to weigh things out.

Ooh, you may want to add kale and some herbs too, maybe parsley and/or coriander.

I hadn't even heard of kale til I got my girls but it's one of their favourites

Ooh what a great idea, as someone who doesn't know alot i think it would be a very useful guide, even if it is a general guide which is what your intention is- i think it's enough to get the idea across.

I'd definatly like a copy :)

I tell the people who have guineas from me that a GP needs one good TEAcup full of mixed veggies split into two servings. A couple of times a week this can include some fruit. If that is all they have it is difficult to OD on any one particular veg. I also include a list of no no's eg. potatoes, mushrooms, anything oniony, iceberg lettuce etc. xx

"My" rescue gave a little brochure on care that had pictures of how much of each veggie was enough vitamin C for a piggy. I think it's brilliant and used it a lot in the beginning. That way it's easy to see that to match the vitamin C in a "ring" of red pepper you need a whole (little) carrot and only a small bit of curly cale or one bouquet of broccoli, for example.

Thanks for the ideas. I have decided to split it into 3 posters, and do like traffic lights, so I have a green for foods they can have often, amber for foods they can have in moderation and red for things they shouldn't be given.

So far I have:

GREEN
parsley
kale
celery
brocolli
cucumber
carrot tops

AMBER
apple
bell peppers
corn on the cob

RED
potatoes
mushrooms
onions
iceberg lettuce

I need more ideas, I will need about 8 for each.

If you can stress on the posters that variety and moderation are key, it might make things appear a little more flexible. A few more ideas for each..

Green:
Coriander
Lettuces
Strawberries

Amber:
Grapes

Red:
Rhubarb
Meat

Personally I would move broccoli and kale to Amber - simply because they are 'gassy' veggies and may upset pigs prone to digestive conditions e.g. bloat. Cabbage could also fall into this category.

Bell peppers are good to give daily, just a small slice can provide most if not all of their Vit C needs.

It's looking good. Can I pinch your idea? lol Green Beans in whichever you feel appropriate. Bread, (Cereal such as cornflakes etc) in red. xx

I forgot all about green beans! Shame on me, my lot love them but I've not bought them for ages. Best get it on the shopping list!

I usually feed one green bean daily, it doesn't bother my bloaty pigs.

Yep, pinch whatever you like, i'll email you the posters when they are done if you want them.
