Hi guys!

We recently bought an 8 month old Male guinea pig from a small pet store and it seems like he isnt drinking and he is losing weight. I dont know if he is depressed from not having a playmate or just needs different food?

Thanks for any information

If he has lost weight, I would take him to the vet to see what is going on. He could have an illness or something from the pet store. Also getting him a friend is a good idea in general.

@Andreymacy Weight loss means that he has a medical issue and so needs to go to a vet.

It could be many things from dental issues to digestives issues, it would be impossible for us to guess.

Hi and welcome

Please have any new guinea pig vet checked. Over 80% of the food intake is hay. Not all guinea pigs drink.

Please make sure that he is safe in any hot weather; heat stroke can also cause weight loss.

Once he has stabilised and is healthy again, then you can consider finding him a friend, preferably one he can choose himself. It is unfortunately not quite as easy as sticking another guinea pig in the cage and expecting them to get on like a house on fire!

I agree with everyone else. Please schedule a vet appointment ASAP.
