Often a guinea pigs name is just chosen because the owner likes the name and it suits the piggie. Sometimes we might consult baby name books and glance at meanings, but it's the name we are drawn to rather than the meaning.

With my own pigs I have found that - purely by chance - the name that suits the guinea so well, has a meaning accurate to the character of the guinea. I chose their names because of the name, the meaning didn't come into it.

These are mine...

Past piggies:

Charlie - strong, courageous
Lottie - little strong woman

Dexter Pippin - dexterous, skilful, father
Gwenivere - white phantom
Saffron - spice
Breanna - strong, virtuous
Jasmine Peaches - sweet flower, soft and fluffy outside and sweet inside
Willamina - resolute, determined guardian
Franklyn Edward - free, prosperous guardian
Meghan Lottie-Rose - pearl, little strong woman
Delilah Grace - brooding, beautiful temptress, graceful
Sophia Mae - wisdom, great one
Elijah Ruben - the lord is my God, son
Errol Alexander - wanderer, helper or defender of humankind (or piggiekind!)
Pandora Phoebe - talented one, shining bright
Harrison Winston - son, English town

What is so fascinating, is that all those in blue are totally accurate to their characters or, in a couple of cases, appearance. All but four names out of sixteen describe something about those guineas:

Pandora is a satin, her second name means shining bright.
Franklyn is a very active piggie who is protective of his cage and his lady - his name points to this.
Sophia is a quiet girl but I believe she's got a lot sussed out - wisdom.
Saffron is a very spicy, strong character.
Gwenivere - white phantom...she's a PEW. Need I say more?
Jasmine Peaches - a completely accurate description of her.
Charlie was an amazing little soul, he fought his illnesses so strong and never let it get to him.
Lottie was exactly what her name means - a little strong woman. Likewise with Meghan Lottie-Rose who shares that name.

Tuppy's name isn't listed anywhere - a lot of pet names won't be, but those with 'human' names are very interesting to find out!

Anyone else interested in looking into their piggie names and whether the meanings really fit?

I used a baby names website that gives you the meanings when I pick names for the rescues, so sometimes I'm led by what the name means (although I usually forget soon after! :red)

Interesting to see how yours fit though!

Me :),

Fred peaceful ruler.... do you think that stands for wuss and sits on the fence? He is very gentle though!
Wilma means protector... which she used to be quite a wee guard dog... and sit out in the open watching but she doesn't really do this anymore!
Pebbles means small rock... how original?!

I never named Fred... but his name fitted him so well... that it stayed and the girls well flintstones but I do think they suit there names now :)!

I think their meanings suit their character Joanne, from what you've said! Fred is the boss of his two girls, even if he never puts that across he is the man of the house and is a peaceful kinda guy. Pebbles could be a rock in the sense of supportive, there for the other guins etc. so might apply a bit there? Only you know them best. :))

Could it mean fat rock :))... She steals all the food... and makes the most noise.. She is also the fattest which doesn't surprise me but I do think she is a support for Wilma when Fred is annoying her! The girls are very bonded so I suppose that could apply... I use to call Wilma a wee guard dog so protector fits her well.... I suppose Fred is a peaceful giant so I guess he could be a peace keeper although it's normally him upsetting the girls :))... he is a peaceful giant though :)! Ok so my piggy names fit :)) x

I am the other way round, and for me the meaning has to fit the piggy - even if I have to wait a bit and rename it, if necessary upon meeting it!

Llewelyn = Lugh (Celtic god of light/skills) + Belenus (Celtic sun god);
a fitting name for the Prince of my piggies!
Nia = bright; my clever top lady
Nerys= lady; my big girl, who never moves fast
Taffy = beloved; she needs lots of love to bring her to trust people
Telyn = harp; my very vocal girl!
Cariad = darling; named by Hels - a good name for my shy girl!
Ceri = love; named by Becky - you can't help it falling in love with her!
Fflur = Flower(her old name); she is lovely and has certainly blossomed!

not sure.......
Furby - i think it is a furry toy?
Cottonbud - well she is white and occasionally has yellow marks on her
Jive - well he is lively cheeky chap

out of them i only named Jive and it suits him, but i think they all sort of like their names, well they know them so was never going to be able to change them!

Hehe just read this-
Based on our research, most people would imagine a person with the name Paislee to be: Young, energetic and possess good writing skills
So if my Paislee was a person she would be a good writer!

And-
Based on our research, most people would imagine a person with the name Phoebe to be: Conservative and attractive lady
In one word, you might describe Phoebe as a(n) "attractive" person.
So if my Phoebe was a person she would be attractive!

Well, I must admit some of my piggies names fit...

Pheobe = Shining bright... I think she has a twinkly look in her eye and she definately is very bright

Ruby = Means red, like the jewel. Well, our Rubes has red eyes. rolleyes But she is such a treasure!

Bethany = House of figs... Well, THAT's an odd meaning!LOL

Maggie-May = Maggie means Pearl, May means the fifth month of the year. She is a little unusual treasure, and she was born in may!

Sonny = means Son. Well, he is like my baby boy. xoxo

So most of them fit, Bethany definitely doesn't fit though!

Hmmm...

Pippa - 'Lover of Horses' I don't think Pippa has ever met a horse, but she can run as fast as one when she's having a mad half-hour! She does seem quite fond of the cat though :))

Simon chose the name Pippa as soon as he saw our girl :)

Willow - 'Name of a slender and graceful wood tree' Although not particularly slender, she can be graceful and seems to have a calming presence on the other two.

Took us about two days to choose her name.

Pixel - 'The pixel is the smallest addressable screen element, it is the smallest unit of picture which can be controlled.' Aptly named at the time as she was so tiny when we first got her. Will no doubt not fit as well when she'd older, but it seems to suit her very well somehow :)

Took us alomst two weeks to settle on this name. She was almost Mouse or Bree

we actually had the names for ours before we got them :))

i was madagascar daft and had decided they would be called maurice & julien after two of the lemurs in the film cos thought they were :(|)

and as luck would have it we ended up with a black and white (jules) and a brown and white (maurice) just like the lemurs in the film

dont think the meanings would fit our two because theyre pure nuts :))

My first two piggys Pinky and Perky I named because Pinky had a Pink ear and Perky was well just always Perky.
The newest two piggies (Poppy and Patch) were named because Patch is completely black aprt from a ring of white round his belly and a small 'patch' of white behind his head and Poppy because she was really quite (well she was when we got her) and poppys grew on Flanders fields and they were silent after the war.
I don't know what or if the names mean anything but that is why I named them them names.

I just looked up the meaning of 'Farquhar'. It means 'beloved man' in gaelic. I know my little 'Farquhar' was actually a girl was she was certainly beloved..How quaint.

Seeing as mine don't have names you would find on a baby website :(|) I really do believe they suit their names because Hoggle has the white hair like the real Hoggle and Ludo is a fat bear! :(|)

OMG MY Hoggle and Ludo are on page 2 of Google - just found them after looking for the real Hoggle and Ludo! :o
