I have a guinea pig that has an abscess on her cheek, she is in perfect health otherwise and is eating and drinking. My concern is at the moment the vets are only open for emergency’s due to a he lockdown in the country. The abscess is around 1 1/2 cm

Hi!

A dental abscess counts as an emergency, as does any fast growing lump. Please contact a vet promptly.

All the best!

I agree. Please contact your vet as it will be seen as an emergency.

I have a poorly piggy myself. Thankfully I already have the meds at home from the last time she was ill but if she is still poorly when the meds are finished, I’ll be phoning my vet asking for advise

Can I just add to this comment that @Claire W is treating her guinea pig for an ongoing long term issue with regular flare ups, as this is one; she has been given medication from her vet for just that case.

As a forum, we emphatically do NOT support treating your piggies at home on spec unless absolutely necessary in case you really cannot access any open vet clinic. UK vets are increasingly in the process (or have done so already) of setting up a video facility to help with judging which cases need to be seen and treated in a hands-on consultation.

Rightly said. I have spoken with my vet who has given permission for me to medicate at home should Ellen have a flare
