Hi everyone, I'm new at this forum so first of all i apologize for any mistake here, and for the bad english.

I own 2 piggies one is 2 years old (Rafa) and the other one 1 1/2 year (Donna). Recently I noticed Donna was loosing weight and stop eating so, I took her to vet (I live in Uruguay where is not very common to find vets that have knowledge in rodents) and He realized she had her molars grown, so we perform a dental procedure with GA, and even he trimmed her incisors.
The dental work seems to have been a success, this was on last Saturday, but she still does not eat for her own which got me really nervous about because the dental work was 3 days ago.

I've tried to force her to eat by putting food in her mouth but it's a struggle and most of the time she spit it out with her tongue. Then I tried to feed her with a syringe with processed vegetables and she eats very little. She keeps loosing weight drink very little water, and I don't know what else to do.

Do you please have any advice for me?

Hi, it sometimes takes a few days for the pig to get used to the new teeth profile to but Donna should be eating for her self by now
is she abel to eat hay?
it is very important that she eats somthing on her own to wear the new teeth in

but you also need to keep her hydrated, l will try and find the forams link for syringe feeding

Hi Gizzy, thanks for your reply, she does not eat anything by her own I've to force her to eat, I even try with soaked pellets in water to make it them softer but she didn't eat it.

The only thing that I could make her eat was the processed vegetables with a syringe but in very little portions, less than 50 milliliters a day.

it is a white powder that you mix with water . personaly l have found it a life saver

Thank you very much Gizzy, I'll look for it here, by the way, later today I've an appointment with the vet, so I hope we find a work around for this.

if you have got a 1ml syinge , cut the tip off to make it easyer to load the load the slury you make from her dried feed ground to a powder .

put a bit of celotape around the top of the plunger to stop the plunger from comming out of the end

Gizzy, that's awesome, thanks for all the tips, I'm gonna try this and then let you know.

Hi Helen, thank you very much, I bought some drops, that contains vitamins and I'm mixing it up with processed vegetables, is the best I could find in Uruguay...
So, I'm making a mix with the veggies and force her to eat it through the syringe, so far is eating the mix.

I think I may have to give her a little time. By the way later today I've an appointment with the vet to check her progress.
I let you guys know.

Thank you very much!

Does she have pellets as part of her usual food? if so you can mush them up and syringe them too? If you weigh her daily too you can track if she is losing weight or not. Good luck at the vets.

That's great, will just help the fibre content of what you are feeding her so it doesn't give her loose poos.

Hi everyone, we took Donna to the vet yesterday and he said that her teeth look good, that the delay in eating can be normal, that we should continue syringe feeding her and that in one or two more days she should be eating by her own. He told us that if at friday she is still not eating maybe we have to polish her molars a little bit more.

Yesterday evening she was trying to eat on her own and now in the morning too, she doesn't eat a lot but is something! Even though I'll still syringe feed her today.
Thank you all for the tips it where very very useful!

My Penfold had Dental work last Thursday he was still eating just not enough to maintain his weight. I was able to stop topping him up on Monday - 3 days after his dental. I did also give him some pain killer initially. We have Timothy hay with thick stalks which I would offer as well as syringe feeding him. Also I would recommend weighing twice daily morning and evening, that way you will be able to monitor Donna's weightloss and know if your feeding enough and also how much she is eating.

Hey guys, I have one question, we always (almost everyday) take the piggies out of their cage for about an hour or two and we sit with them and they run and popcorn with us.
When we take it out she is very active, she run among us, and explore the house.

Since the dental work we haven't take it out because she was low of energy, but now that she is eating a little and being syringe fed seems to be more active even in her cage, do you think it is a good idea to do it to evaluate Donna behavior?

Thanks!

Ok, I was thinking to do it for a few minutes, I don't want her to consume all of her energy. But that's great I'll do it later in the afternoon.
Thanks Helen
