I love my little pigs very much, but unfortunatly when I handle them or even just give them a little stroke on the nose, I begin to sneeze, my eyes become itchy and sometimes i come out in a rash on my arms. I must go through packets and packets of piriton and I`m spending a small fortune. Does any one else have this problem ? and if so how do you get round it ?

You could try having them on fleece only and bathing them in a non perfumed shampoo (which is the best anyways) and see if that helps?
It took me awhile to get used to our boys years ago cause of the hay, but i slowly adjusted.
Best of luck i hope you find a solution :)

What kind of shampoo would you recomend using? my two boys are just over a year old now, and I have only bathed them twice. I found it caused them alot of stress so I haven`t bothered since.
I have also tried using fleece as bedding. My Husband wasn`t very happy about me putting it in the washing machine, he said it was disgusting and it also caused a couple of rows rolleyes He isn`t realy an animal lover, he is a bit of a grumpalump when it comes to animals.
Thanks.x

If you ask in your pharmacy they usually sell cheaper alternatives to Piriton, my BF takes them if we're visiting people with dogs/cats and they work just as well.

You can get them really cheap here http://www.chemistdirect.co.uk/30-days-allergy-and-hayfever-relief-cetirizine-tabs_1_10167.html

Of course there is postage to pay (£3.49) unless you spend over £40 (they do sell g/pig food etc... though)

When I was our fleece I put it in an old pillowcase so the hay doesn't go in the washer.

lots of piriton, lots of anti histamine cream, careful handling and time! I was the same with my Rex agouti, sadly no longer with me, but eventually the allergy disappeared, and it was really bad sometimes, it affected my breathing and everything but it did disappear over time.

Good luck :{

That sounds like a good idea, I`ll give it a go. I`m using hemcore at the minute, when the guinea pigs run around the cage, the hemcore flicks all over the dining room floor and makes an awfull mess, I am forever sweepin up.
:{

I will have a look for a cheaper alternative to piriton.

I know the chemist told my BF about them when he asked for some, they told him another brand was cheaper and had more in them with the same active ingredient.

I'll have a look at the name of them when I'm at home x

I secure the pillow case with an old hair bobble to make sure nothing can come out :)

I buy cetrazine from Tesco in a pack of 30 (own brand). I also use a Budesonide spray prescribed by my GP.

boots do a 'value' range of antihistimines, I've checked the packets before and they're the same as the branded ones, only cheaper. They're in plain white boxes.

xx
