Guinea pig and bunny together

My sister has two female piggies and is thinking of getting a female rabbit to join them. I tried to suggest that it wasn't such a good idea, but she just said that she knows loads of people who do it, and it is fine.

Don't know if I'm imagining it but wasn't there some RSPCA guidance on this, or something along those lines, that I might be able to show her? Anyone know what I'm talking about or am I going mad?

Don't have anything to hand but yep if you search the RSCPA pages there are some online leaflets there and also DEFRA have some information too.

Was reading on mylot.com that pigs that eat pellets for rabbits can get upset tums so its not a good idea at all for that alone plus the kicking that can happen.

Just tell her to go to a pet shop that houses buns and pigs together it won't take long to see a bun trample on a pig.

Why do some people think it is ok to have them living together :o Piggies and rabbits living together is a definite NO. Suggest to her that if she wants a rabbit, she is best to have him/her in a separate hutch. If she is worried about company, why not have 2 rabbits. If she won't listen to you or the RSPCA warnings, show her peoples replies on here. Good luck

i'd be printing off a leaflet and handing it to her. if she still goes and gets a rabbit and piggie then yo will just have to bite your tongue. Sometimes there is no telling people. x

I think it is the antibiotic in rabbit feed that harms piggies kidneys and can kill them but if you dont feed it to the rabbit they could get mixamatosis (sp) and die.

Rabbit and guinea pig food is completely differently balanced nutritionally. Not all rabbit foods contain antibiotics and rabbits should be vaccinated by a vet against myxi. Rabbits can carry diseases (without symptoms) that can make guinea pigs ill such as pasteurellosis.

rabbits are not protected from mysi by there food they have to be vacinated by a vet my rabbit snowy has to be vacinated twice a year for mysi as we live in the country

Just direct her to the RSCPA and then tell her she will be breaking the law!
The times people have told me they had done it as a child and it was ok then i give them a list of what can go wrong then leave the law till the end!

I have seen the effects of a piggy who has been trampled by a bunny & it was heartbreaking, this happened to a friend who kept both together years ago.
My step-daughter's bunny used to live in the piggy shed, he got the "sniffles" which is pasturella, i was in hosp at the time & ordered him to be taken out but within 2 weeks 2 of my piggies had died. Was it a coincidence? I will never know

Piggies can also inflict nasty wounds on a rabbit, for me it wouldn't be worth it. Rabbits should be kept with rabbits and piggies with piggies.

Also remember that rabbits will kick out with their hind legs and kill the piggy. So not a good idea to mix them.

(I think its illegal under a new law in the UK anyway).
