Our guinea-pig Patch will be two years old in December. She shares a cage with a neutered male, Sparky, and has been a happy littel pig so far. On Sunday, we were sitting in the living room and all of a sudden, she jumped, ran through the cage and then stayed in one corner of the cage for hours. I took her out and she seemed fine with me, but as soon as we put her back she disappeared into her corner again. The same happened today. She will come out hesitantly to eat and drink, but generally, she seems very anxious and scared. It can't be Sparky because he comes up to her and she doesn't try to withdraw from him and we have searched the cage, thinking there might be a big spider, but we found nothing. Has anyone experienced that before? We have not done anything that we haven't done before.

I have had something similar, i think some piggies have a 6th sense, i swaer one of my piggies Honey (R.I.P) used to see ghosts, she used to stare at something (nothing) and then back away from it carefully as if it was touching her on the nose.

I should maybe mention that I myself have an anxiety disorder which recently became worse. Not sure if she somehow picks up on it, but we only take them out in the evenings when we have settled down and when I'm feeling ok.
Am wondering if we should take her to the cet, but she'd be anxious there anyway and I'm not sure what a vet could do.

I think their incredible sense of smell probably effects them one way or another too. Something in the air? They probably wont be able to smell it either.. but um.. have you got a carbon monoxide gas leak check thingy?

sorry by the way.. don't mean to make you feel worried about your home.... we just wanted to rule it out when our guineas went through a quiet phase.

We don't have a gas heating. And it's been going on since Sunday. And the other five piggies are fine.
Just my anxiety disorder is skyrocketing now, just questioned my bf on our heating and all kinds of crazy things. :red

sorry! well I guess if you have no gas heating and the other guineas are fine then you have nothing to worry about.

Different guineas certainly do have different personalities, one of my girls used to be very starey and quiet. One move and she was out of there! It's most likely she is being the most nervous out of the bunch...

and sorry again for making you feel wibbly.mallethead

Patch is much better. My bf said that he saw our crazy neigbour clean and she was apparently using some very aggressive, smelly stuff to clean. We think Patch might have smelled that. But she seems to be almost completely back to normal now.
