Hi, ive never posted here before, but my little sister fed my guinea pig a clump of dust she found somewhere. I was wondering if hell be okay or if this warrants a vet trip immediately. For those who say i shouldve payed more attention, i understand it falls on me for not paying close enough attention to what she was doing with him, even though shes always very gentle with him. She says it was a quarter sized amount of dust which has me panicking a little

I appreciate any responses

I don’t know but your piggy might throw it up later, hopefully. My sis fed my guinea pig peaches a leaf, I freaked out but Peaches threw it up.

Dust are tiny particles, I find it hard to think a piggy would eat it. Piggies have very narrow airways and dust can irritate them causing them to sneeze.

As @Piggies&buns has already said, guinea pigs are not able to vomit, however they are known for sometimes eating things they shouldn't.
As long as your guinea pig seems ok and is eating, drinking and pooping then a small piece of dust shouldn't do any major harm.

Hi

If Peaches 'threw up' a leaf, it means that it didn't taste right to her and she never swallowed in in the first place. Rodents do not have a vomit reflex. What has been swallowed down, will have to come out at the other end. But they have about double the number of tastebuds compared to humans and learn as babies and youngsters what is safe to eat. Anything that doesn't taste 'safe', won't be eaten. that is also the reason why it can be so difficult to introduce new foods to some piggies. ;)

The piece of dirt will hopefully just make its way through the gut. Is there are way to make sure that your little sister cannot get at your guinea pigs?

Just keep an eye on her for the next day and see a vet asap if your piggy is suddenly looking unwell.
