Please help. Our guinea pig was attacked by a dog and we're concerned she might have a broken rib and that it might have punctured her lung. How do we know for sure? We can hear her breathing as it is louder than normal. She is moving around, though not highly active. She acts like she is in pain. We have her in her cage with the cage covered in a blanket to keep it dark in there and her calm. What more can we do and is there any at home remedies that we can give her for pain?

I am so sorry this has happened but please call an emergency vet asap (or your normal practice if they are open, but make them aware of the urgency). There are no home remedies and considering the possible seriousness of her injuries she needs proper medical care now.

How did she end up being so near a dog? Is she and/or any other pigs safe away from the animals now?
I hope she can get seen by a vet in due time.

The vet is closed today, plus we don't have a vet for our guinea pigs.

The guinea pigs are my Mom's and the dog is in my care. I had brought the dog to my Mom's and wasn't expecting this to happen. (The pigs' cage door was closed and all.) The dog is back at my house, so all the guinea pigs are safe.

I’m sorry to hear this has happened.

We can never recommend any home remedy for any condition but certainly not something as serious as this. Your piggy needs to be seen by a vet urgently.

I hope she will be ok

Is there no emergency vets near you at all?

I don't know. There's only one vet that I know of that is nearby and even when they are open, they're not very good. (On my other dog's last vet check-up, they handled him very rough to the point he was growling at them. That situation alone makes me want to find another vet if I could.)

I'd definitely get her emergency treatment at the vets, if she has broken a rib or punctured her lung its going to be very painful, but even if she hasn't the shock alone is enough to cause her body to shut down.

Can you Google local emergency vets in Maine?

Try to go systematically through them to see who's open for emergency care.
You're going to be suffering from shock too. Big hug. Hope your girl is OK.

I am very sorry this has happened but your guinea pig really does need to see a vet NOW, this can not wait. If she has broken anything, she will be in a huge amount of pain and may be suffering from more internal injuries as well as shock. If you phone a vet in your area, even though they are closed there will be a phone number played back to you for the emergency vet details. I hope she’ll be ok x

We just checked on the guinea pig and she acts like she's doing much better! Her breathing is sounding better and she's eating her favorite food, lettuce. Seeing her now, I'm wondering if she was breathing the way she was because of the attack. (She does have some bruising where the dog grabbed her and missing fur.) She's being her usual responsive self (I put a finger in front of her and she sniffed it like she normally does). She is still fluffed up and she's in her hut.

She will still need to see a vet, as internal injuries can otherwise go undiagnosed and be potentially fatal

I do hope you manage to get her an appointment

Are there measures in place to prevent future dog attacks?

My mom is currently in contact with someone who is very experienced with animals. I'm hoping she can get answers with that person.

The dog is at my house right now, not my Mom's. I won't be bringing the dog back to my Mom's or any other dog, for that matter.

Your piggy needs a qualified vet for full diagnosis and treatment, painkillers at the very least - hopefully the person your mum is in contact with is a vet
