is fleece easier and healthier than paper? weve had piggies for 3 weeks and I'm already over the paper bedding. can i just go to the store and buy like blanket fleece cut to fit my cage?

also our girls are about 3 and 9 months old. the older was a rehome and never handled. i would LOVE to litter train them. is it hard how would i go about doing this.

thank you

Hi! :)
I would highly recommend GuineaDad fleece liners.
GuineaDad
They are amazing and great for wicking moisture.

I'm afraid litter training your piglets isn't really an option. Guinea pigs will often poop and pee where they sleep. :)
I was able to mostly litter train my piglets, but that is only because caring for them is my full-time job. It took SUPER long, and even now they still have accidents.
I hope that this helps!

Oh!
I forgot to answer your question!
You can't really buy plain fleece blankets from the store for your piggies.
They don't wick moisture properly and will get wet and smelly fairly quickly.

We would love to see some pigtures! :luv:

Hello again,

In fact you can use plain fleece from the store, but not on its own (I.e. Fleece does not equal fleece liner). It needs to be layered over something absorbent so that the pee gets sucked into that and the fleece remains dry. Some people sew their fleece to a mattress protector to make a liner, or you can by ready made ones as recommended above.

This is all explained in the thread that Mo & Stunning & Vani has linked above, do take a look!

One thing to watch out for with the sewn together liners is that, if you have a large cage, it may better to use a few smaller ones rather than one for ease of washing.

We use a combination of newspaper, fleece and puppy pads in the play/run area, with hay in the sleeping area.

The other thing I've seen people have started using is a particular type of shower mat, someone may be able to chip in with more detail on that!

Re litter training, I'm not sure you can stop guineas from pooping wherever they go, but they certainly do it more in certain places so you can kind of take advantage of that to concentrate their poops in certain areas. E.g. if you pop a rabbit litter tray filled with hay in a secluded corner of your run you may well find that collects a lot of poop.

We use a combo of noodle bath mats and fleece, I find the noodle mats a bit easier to shake off the hay and they are easier to get hold of than fleece liners which we get custom made and have to wait a few weeks for! I’d also recommend some smaller squares to use in the heavy areas, our pigs have two main heavy areas were 85% of their poops are they are easy to lift out and shake off each day and I change them out every 2-3 days as they are much more heavily soiled!

You’ve been given a good link above. Whatever fleece you buy make sure you wash it several times and check that it’s wicking - when you put some water on top it’s absorbed through and doesn’t stay sitting on top. You then need an absorbent later underneath. Anything from zorb to a waterproof mattress protector to washable/disposable puppy pads.

Guinea pigs can’t be litter trained. They will go everywhere and anywhere, but mainly where they sleep and eat.

:wel: And we’d love to see your piggies and know more about them.

thank you everyone

i actually have a post on the new member board telling about our girls with photos.

I use newspaper and woodshavings.

My piggy Nibbles uses only the corner tray for poops but wees in a few places.
I now have a second boar and he goes everywhere and it is so annoying. Needs cleaning out twice as much.

Piggies can’t be litter trained as they generally poo and pee where they eat/drink and where they sleep. That’s the hazards of owning them, no point getting annoyed about it. And it’s a sign of good health anyway. And this is quite an old thread...

I didnt mean that in a bad way. I love my piggies. I found this thread while seaching for help with something else. One litter trained himself. Even pulls on clothes when he needs to go when handled. Clearly I was super lucky with Nibbles. He must be a genius piggy. Maybe he will train Nutmeg!
