Hi,

Over the years i've come on here and got fantastic advise about what bedding to use for my guinea pig. I started off with Hay, then moved to paper, then moved to puppy training matts, and now i've been using vetbed for a good while, well over 6 months, its deffinitely the best of the lot, and i put newspapers under it. I do find however that the corners of the bedding , where she pees the most, stay quiet wet., I change the newspapers under it every day, and remove any poop and hay on top of it daily too. ( mind this doesnt last long, she's a pooing machine). I was wondering if anyone could give me any advise on this. Should i be changing the vet bed more than once a week? Thing is i put it in a 90degree wash, so wouldnt want to waist much more electricity that once a week on 90 degrees. I was thinking of blow drying the corners each day with hair dryer to make it dry, but found that the smell then wooshes all around the room cos i'm drying wet pee. Any advise would be appreciated. thanks.
Helen

mine do exactly the same its always in corner i only change mine once a week but i use paper vet bed fleece on top of that and igloo but they are out side so i pack it up to make sure are warm so like yest i just changed paper and fleece put new paper down and fleece so i change vet bed once a week but go in evey day and clean poo was holding one last night got wet on twice and you think yours is a poo machine my did 8 poos on me dont know where they store it lol

i'd never thought of using vet bed. I have four guienas and the amount of shaving we get through is immense. So do you use just vetbed and hay as a bed?

My piggies are on newspaper, old towels and then nice soft fleece on top with hay in the pigloo too (as well as lots of hay in the hay loft and by their food bowls). I do find that the corners of the cage get quite damp, we clean them out every 2-3 days entirely and have a poo-sweep normally every night.
I have been considering trying vetbed although I want to leave them to settle a bit more first. Does it really stay dry on top? More so than a fleece/towel/newspaper combo?
The fleece my piggies are on seems to pass the wee through to the towel and newspaper - except in one or two corners where the load is too much for the fleece to handle!
Haha, they really are pooing machines - I was quite shocked!

mine always stops dry its just the paper in corners but i have a fleece on top which does get in a state some times

I change my vet bed once a week, but the newspaper every two days, the corners do get wet underneath, but the top remains dry.

Is there any particular reason you wash at 90 degrees every time? Mine does well on a 30 degree wash, but there are a few times when 60 degrees plus is called for.

I use fleece and underline it with puppy pads. I have the corners double layered (I cut out a 1/4 of a pad and put it in the corner) in one cage because I can just change the top layer without having to do a complete change because it saves on the puppy pads. And I do a complete change twice a week (usually Wednesday and Saturday).

I just wash it at 90degrees i suppose cos i do think of right, gotta get all that wee out kinda way. I just assume with the 90 degree it will kill any germs better and take out any stains she might have left behind. I only have 1 piece of vet bed, so to change it more often would mean having to wash it and dry it and wait for it to dry before putting her back in, usually i do it on a saturday and leave her running around on the balcony for the 2-3 hours while its all done, if i had a 2nd one it would be much handier cos i'd be able to clear her cage out twice a week which I'm sure would help alot. I do clear out her poo and hay every singel day when i get home from work with a handheld hoover i bought in argos cos 50 euro.. its fantastic, and keeps me away from the poo. I might invest in the 2nd vet bed and hope that works. Just its so expensive but i know overall its worth it cos all i need is newspaper to throw out now, and i get 2 of those free each day on the street so i use those each day.

hey kat,

I use newspaper down on the bottom, then i put down the vetbed then she's got a little wooden house in there that i have a towel inside that she sleeps in.... i put her hay in a hay cube, its great for keeping most of the hay off the vetbed, but she still manages to spread it good. I do have to say smell wise, the difference between vet bed and anything else i've used is 100% better. Suppose its cleaner too... :-)

I use vet bed, I change it every day washed at 40 degrees and it is fine :)

every day? how many supplies of it do you have to be able to replace like that? i dont think i'd have the time to clear it out every day, well i would, but not wash it every single day.

i hve only one vet bed so when i take that out to wash i put newspaper on bottom shredded newspaper and fleece

I have bought sleeping bags for mine and they get quite a bit wee'd on and I change them a couple of times a week, it cuts down the need to wash the vet bed as much!

I changed back over to fleece at the weekend, i got 5 fleece blankets in dunnes stores for €15 euro. PINK too, tee hee. I just find, that with the vet bed, while its great, its too hard to clean the hay/poo off it, cos of the pile in it. Plus it hold the wee in the corners alot more than the fleece ever did. Cos also i was able to buy 5 fleece blankets, i can change it every 2 days, and its so simple to clean it. I take the newspapers from under it every day now, i fold the fleece over and use other side on the 2nd day, and then like today, ill remove that fleece and replace wtih one of the others and wash it. On 30degree wash.

ye exactly, plus i washed the first fleece the other day and nothing whatsoever was left in the washing machine, usually i have to scoop all the poo and hay out of the rubber area with a cloth and wash that too. I just used a small brush to brush the hay and poo off the fleece and every big was off. plus the room smells of nothing now, not even slight wiff of her. :))
